Unit teaches how to support people living with dementia, they have all needs and desires like we
have, only thing, because of dementia they can’t communicate & express their wishes, like we do.
We need to understand the underline meaning of their behaviours & symptoms, this is how they are
saying something to us, about any discomfort or may be asking for something and to help them. May
be client is hungry, wet, shoes not fitting properly, uncomfortable clothes or needs medicine review.

Dementia is not a disease, it is rather combination of symptoms that may accompany diseases. Two
most common forms of dementia are: Alzheimer’s disease – is due to damage and changes of nerve
cells in the brain, other one is: Vascular dementia – is due to stroke where blood supply to brain is
cut off due to clotting or blood vessels bursting in brain.

Memory loss, forgetfulness, restlessness, being angry, getting agitated and loss of control on
activities of daily living, (ADL), such as showering, dressing, cooking, eating, recognising family and
friends and taking active part in communicating or conversation are some of the symptoms.

Early, Moderate and Advanced, are the three stages of dementia.

Causes thought be are – abuse of alcohol, drugs and other substances, stress etc. So far there is no
definite medical treatment known to cure dementia or why it happens.
