Calculation title Black-start fuel gas(off N1) cooling Page 1 of 5
Calculation objective
Preface: The black start fuel gas on NCWI is anticipated to be made available from N1 test separator at a operating
conditions (P=400 psig, T=95°C). As part of conditioning of the fuel gas, the N1 gas is required to be cooled down to as low
as 45°C. Given the distance between N1 and NCWI to be 40 m, it is contemplated to make use of 40 m long unwarranted-
travelling of the gas in the cooling service, such that the massive air-cooler which is otherwise required could be eliminated.
Objective: With the above background and intention, the objectives of this calculation are as follows:
1) To estimate the overall heat transfer coefficient between the gas flow in the pipe and ambient air.
2) To estimate the cooling duty and coressponding heat transfer area.
3) To estimate the long fin pipe to meet the required heat transfer area.
If air cooling via single (3") long fin-pipe comes out to be insufficient from the calculation, then further two options will be
studied to meet the required cooling duty; A) flow splitting in parallel fin-pipes, B) dipping the fin-pipe in the sea.
Calculation method :
1) Evaluation of individual film heat transfer coefficients; ambient air side and gas side.
2) Determination of overall heat transfer coefficient.
3) Estimation of LMTD and required cooling duty.
4) Estimation of required heat transfer area.
5) Estimation of available heat transfer area for fin pipes.
Assumptions
1) Normal air velocity 10 m/s. Given 1 minute mean air velocity 20.6 m/s (per BOD wind data). Conservative assumption.
2) Max. air temperature 35°C (per BOD max. temp. 35°C). Conservative assumption.
3) Distance between N1 and NCWI to be 40 m. Conservative assumption.
