Lesson 1: Working with Text and Fonts and Using Graphic
Symbol.
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 Define graphic symbol
 Discuss the steps in creating graphic symbols.
 Develop patience and perseverance in learning the technicalities of basic animation using Flash.
 Identify the different text options available in Flash CS 5.5.
 Discuss the concept of Text Layout Framework (TLF) text
 Exhibit efficiency in using the text options in Flash

I. ACTIVATE

There are several different kinds of text that you

can use in Flash 8. The three text field types
available are static, dynamic, and input text, and
they are each used for different purposes. Static
3 COMPUTER EDUCATION 8
text is similar to an image or graphic: It displays any
kind of text on the Stage and does not change
unless you manually edit the text field. Dynamic
text can be used with ActionScript to change what
displays in the field—for example, it might change
based on some user action (such as a failed login) or if you load text into the field from a file on a
server. Input text allows a user to type in text when the SWF file is running in Flash Player. You might
use this rather often if you are building a form in which you need to gather a person’s name and
address. ActionScript is used to capture input text that a visitor types into the form and then send it to
a server.

ACTIVITY #1
List down your most use fonts. Write your answer in the box given.

II. DISCOVER
The Text Menu
Flash CS5.5 offers easy navigation of desired text
options. The text menu is located at the top portion
of the application for easy access.

From the menu, the following character options can

be accessed:

 Font Used to set the font family such as Times

New Roman, Verdana, Arial, etc.
 Size- Used to set the font size of the text (i.e.
20 pt, 10 pt)
 Style- Used to control the font style of the text (i.e. bold, italic, regular).
 Align-Used to control the alignment of the text (i.e. align left, align right, align center).
4  Letter Spacing - Used to control the character spacing for each letter (i.e., 1 pt., 2pt., EDUCATION
COMPUTER etc.) 8
 Other options included in this menu are: Check Spelling Spelling Setup, Font Embedding, and
the TLF tab ruler.
Working with Classic Text
In Flash CS5.5, the classic text can still be used. It is the name for the older text engine in Flash
Professional. The following character attributes can be controlled using the character panel window.

 Family used to change the font family of text

(e.g. Times Roman, Verdana, etc.).
 Style used to change the font style of text
(e.g. Bold, Italic).
 Size used to change the font size of text (e.g.,
10, 20 pt., etc.).
 Letter Spacing used to change the spacing of
letters (e.g.. 1.0,0.5, etc.).
 Color - used to change the color of text (e.g.,
blue, yellow, etc.). New

Additional options for fonts can also be applied such as:

 Auto kern alters the horizontal space between two

adjacent characters.
 Anti-Alias - minimizes the distortion artifacts known as
aliasing when representing a high-resolution document.
Using Dynamic Text
1. Static text This is the standard type of text that is created
when typing in Flash. Static text is used to add text to the active
document on the Stage. For instance, buttons or text that do
not need to change or load from an external source. Static
implies that the text content is fixed on the Stage.
2. Dynamic text This is used when the required text is loaded
from an ActionScript, a text file, database, or if there is a change
in the text when the SWF file plays. COMPUTER EDUCATION 8
5
3. Input text - Used when the user is asked to type or enter data
into a text field. The text entered by a user may be sent to an
ActionScript or a database and be manipulated into something
in the SWF file.
Using the TLF Text
Using the TLF text Text Layout Framework (TLF) text is a new text engine introduced in Adobe Flash
Professional CS5. It allows the addition of text to an FLA file. TLF supports a wider array of rich text
layout features and provides finer control over text attributes. TLF text allows greater control of text
than the other text engine, Classic Text.
When creating text, it is important to understand the two types of TLF text containers: point text and
area text.

 The size of a point text container depends solely on the text it contains, whereas the size of an
area text container is independent of the amount of text it contains.
 Point text is the default type of TLF text container. To change a point text container to an area
text container, use the Selection tool to resize it or double-click the small circle at the lower
right of the container's bounding box.

FIS DOCUMENTS 2020 QUARTER 1 MODULE MA. REMEDIOS POSADAS

TLF text requires the specification of ActionScript 3 and Flash Player 10 (or later) in the publish settings
of the FLA file.
TLF text provides more enhancements than the classic text:

 More font styles including spacing, ligatures, color,

underline, strikethrough and capitalization.
 More paragraph styles including multi-column margin.
 Greater control over Asian text attributes such as Tate
Chu Yoko, Mojikumi.
 TLF text can scroll across multiple text boxes known as
threaded or linked text containers.
 Bi-directional text is supported.

ACTIVITY #2
6 COMPUTER EDUCATION 8
Follow the steps given below.
l. Perform the following task:
1. Create a new blank document in Flash CS5.5.
2. Using the classic text options, type in the following text:
The Principle of Love
All living things require love to survive, including ourselves. We must first attend to our own needs for
love before we can love others. When we neglect ourselves emotionally, we become emotionally toxic
and are not whole enough to give love to others. When we change the inner dialog from the inner
critic to that of the inner companion, we bolster our self-esteem and self-respect. Then we are free to
nurture others by being the caring, compassionate, thoughtful, and kind beings we truly are.
3. Now using the TLF text, type the following text
The first time the fox saw a lion he fell down at its feet, ready to die of fright The second time he still
shook with fear, but he managed to raise his eyes and take a quick look at the lion's face. The third
time he was so bold that he Walked right up to the lion and began to talk to it as if he had known it all
his life.
4. Using the three types of text, create three (3) different texts similar to the image below:

5. Next, differentiate each selection using the text block selector.

III. EXPLAIN
Review on Symbols
A symbol is a reusable object in a Flash
document. It can be used repeatedly
throughout the document as many
times as required.
Three types of symbols:

 Movie Clip
 Button
 Graphics
An instance is a copy of a symbol placed
in a document. An instance can have its own properties like color and size. It functions differently from
the original symbol. All the symbols used in a flash document are stored in the Library from where
7 instances can be dragged. and-dropped onto the stage. When a symbol is edited allCOMPUTER

updated. But changing the properties, effects, or dimensions of an instance of a symbol does not affect
the original symbol or other instances of the same symbol.
What is a Graphic Symbol?
Graphic symbols are reusable static images that are primarily used to create animations. It can be an
original drawn vector image, plain text or even an imported bitmap photo. These images can be used
over and over again in one frame in the Timeline.
The difference between graphic symbols and movie clips is that the former cannot inherit the timeline
for each image used. A graphic symbol typically has a small file size, which makes it easy to use over
and over again in a document. Also, each image can easily be edited using the Property Inspector.
Creating graphic symbols
There are two ways to create a graphic symbol in Flash CS5.5.

 Using the New Symbol option: 1. From the Menu bar, click the Insert menu. 2. From the Insert
menu, click New Symbol or use the shortcut key, Ctr+F8.

 Click OK

4. Draw the desired image (be sure it is

centered within the cross hairline on the stage)

5. Click Scene 1 to close the graphic symbol editing screen.

 Using the Convert to Symbol option:
