Learned helplessness is defined as a symptom that usually happened to students who are

having problem with their studies.According to some pshycologist,it occurs when an individual
continuously faces a negative,uncontrollable situation and stops trying to change their
circumstances,even when they have the ability to do so.Once a person having this experience
discovers that they cannot control events around them,they lose motivation.Based on the some
research by them,they listed that there are 5 common symptoms of learned helplessness that
happen in the early age of human(children).The symptoms are low self-
esteem,frustration,passivity,lack of effort and giving up.In addition,there are some other symptoms
such as fail to ask help,poor motivation and procrastination.It is more common for people who have
experienced repeated traumatic events such as childhood neglect and abuse.There are some actions
that can be taken in order to overcome the learned helplessness.

First and foremost,the people with learned helplessness can take a therapy.According to the
professional and highly skilled psychologist,the most common treatment for this therapy is defined
as cognitive behavioural therapy(CBT).CBT can help those people to react by changing and guiding
them on how to think and act wisely.In this therapy,they can improve their self esteem,set goals and
tasks for themselves and identify behaviours that reinforce learned helplessness.This therapy shall
be done continuously and people with this disease can reduce it according to the therapy plan that
had been prepared by the specialist.

Besides,the more cost saving is by changing the environment in a way that helps us to
achieve our goals.In this millennial world,people are having some of the problems that can triggered
their thoughs and desires through the environment such as the social media which is
Instagram,Twitter and so on.Without denying this fact,the bad environment from the social media
may induce people to learned helplessness disease.The good suggestion to make it become healthy
environment is by changing it to a better situation.For an example,sometimes we are surrounded by
the ‘toxic’ people in the social media.We might take some serious action to change it by unfollowing
them or blocking them to make our goals become reality.This is really vital since even if you have
good intentions to complete a task,it is useless if your environment dicatets you to do otherwise.The
people,objects and how your environment is set up will determine and influence your action.

In addition,we need to recognize and accept our learned awareness and get to the root of
it.According to Celestine Chua,he said that “For every effect there is a root cause.Find and address
the root cause rather than try to fix the effect,as there is no end to the latter”.This quite is very
suitable and should be highlighted by the person with this disease.Sometimes,there are many event
that happen in our lifes repeatedly.In fact,we are having problem to solve and find the root for every
problem that occurred.In this situation,maybe there are some things that happened in our childhood
that could contribute to our mindset today.Sometimes,we never realize when we start to feel
helpless in our lifes.By identifying the starting point of our feelings,we can identify a common
denominator that has impacted who we are today.

Furthermore,major of the peoples in this word are having problem in their beliefs.They had
negative thinking about themselves that always lead to depression.Consequently,this will lead to a
unhealthy mental health and might lead to the worst effect such as suicide.This kind of negative
thinking can be overcome by trying to find evidence to oppose that ourselves is incapable to do
some task.For an example,the people with this disease mainly think that the are always not capable
in learning new things.They might seek for a solution by look for evidence to support and to oppose
this thought.Despite of thinking that you will unable to do the task,you should seek for the big
motivation to continue your journey.This negative thinking is commonly happens to the graded
secondary school with SPM result.Usually,they thought that with the good or bad result,they cannot
survive in pursuing their courses in university life.This will inhibit their learning progress and lead to
depression.

Last but not least,people need to watch their selft talk.Sometimes,they tend to make
negative self talk towards themselves.Based on my observation,this is the leading factor that makes
people being demotivated and learned helplessness.For a long time,we are our own worse critics
and put ourselves down.People need to change the paradigm on self talk.They need to start
identifying thoughts that are bringing them down and do not serve any useful purpose.For
example,instead of saying that,”I failed to do that again,”better they ask themselves,”What can I do
in the future to improve myself? I am confident that failure is not the end of a journey instead it is
the beginner of success”.Those kinds of words will help people become motivated and open up the
problem-solving areas of the brain.We are changing the negative thought into positive and despite
of we are defeated by the problem,we are actually plan to keep fighting until the goal is reached.

In conclusion,learned helplessness is a serious disease that happen to the human recently.In


fact,this problem also was found being one type of disease that had occurred to plenty of
animals.Some of the solutions suggested might help to boost our confidence level and motivation to
the top and help to cure this disease.We should remember that prevention is better than
cure!.But,without the intention to change and spirit from us,we will never can avoid ourselves from
the learned helplessness.We need to keep remind ourselves that every disease in this world had its
medicine except death.So,do keep struggling to cure this diseases since we can do it!
