Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Describe the fundamentals of positioning, geodetic parameters and geodetic reference surfaces for geodesists adopted
by Land Surveyor ( C1 )
2. Demonstrate basic geodetic computations to solve surveying problems related to geodesy adopted by Land Surveyor (
A3 )
3. Illustrate the significance of Geodetic datum and Map Projections to fulfill Geodetic fundamentals adopted by Land
Surveyor ( C3 )

Course Description

This course will cover topics in geometrical geodesy including basic concepts and principles of geodesy including geodetic
reference surfaces, coordinates systems and computations on the ellipsoid, geodetic datum and transformation and map
projections.

Syllabus Content

1. Introduction and basic Concepts and Principles of Geodesy

The figure of the Earth, fundamentals of positioning, geodetic parameters and geodetic reference surfaces (Geoid and
Ellipsoid), deviation of the vertical
Basic geometry of the ellipse / ellipsoid – Ellipsoidal coordinates in terms of Reduced, Geodetic and Geocentric
Latitudes and relationship between the various latitudes
Principal radii of curvature on the ellipsoid and their relationship, radius of curvature in any azimuth
Length of meridian arcs and arcs of parallel, normal sections, geodesic curve and isometric latitude

2. Coordinates Systems and Introduction to Computational Earth Model

Coordinate systems – Local (Astronomical) Coordinate System Geocentric Earth-Fixed Cartesian Coordinate System
and Geodetic/Geographic Coordinate System.
Computation in Cartesian Coordinate System – Direct and Inverse Problem
Computation in Geodetic Coordinate System – Direct and Inverse Problem
Orthometric and Ellipsoid height systems and geoid models for height transformation

3. Geodetic Datum and Transformation

Definitions to describe geodetic datum : Geodetic Reference System (GRS), Geodetic reference Frame (GRF), Global
GRS, Local GRS
Horizontal and vertical geodetic datum and change of datum
Geodetic Datum Transformation

4. Map Projections

Introduction; basic theory; classifications of projections and its properties

Fundamental methods of map projections – emphasis on conformal projection
Computational aspects : orthomorphic transformation; derivation of basic projection equations
Working with projection : convergence, line scale factor, arc to chord corrections
Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Projection; Malayan Rectified Skew orthomorphic Projection and Cassini
