1. Introduction
The average age of the population is constantly increasing, so it is important to think
about the needs of older people, as they will increase in number in the future. We
then tried to satisfy one of their needs and noticed that as we get older, it became
more common to lose balance and therefore fall.

That's why we decided to launch the “EasySit”. The “EasySit” consists of a

mechanism that allows a nurse, but also any other person, with a minimum
knowledge of first aid, to easily put a person who has fallen to the ground in a seated
position.

This product will therefore allow nurses who work longer and longer to simplify
their workload and avoid back pain, which they usually encounter at the end of their
careers.

To do this, we have designed a two-position foldable stretcher, which allows it

to easily take the shape of a seat. The product can easily be moved from one
position to another automatically thanks to different battery-powered motors, which
are controlled by a minicomputer.

For a future version, it might be conceivable to make the device autonomous.

To do this, the person who may need the “EasySit” should be accompanied by a
locating device. Indeed, after mapping the area, the device will then be able to move
alone to the patient. The patient will then have to put himself alone in the appropriate
position, which is the lateral safety position. Once done, the "stretcher" will approach
so that the user only has to turn around on himself. Such an evolution could then
make it possible to significantly expand the target market since each elderly person
alone in an apartment or house could be a potential customer. For such a version, it
will be necessary to propose the possibility of mapping the habitat, which is a
relatively simple thing to do, for example, using lasers.

2. Overview of the market

As introduced before, the product is mainly developed to ease the work of nurses.
Indeed, the population is becoming older in a lot of countries and the phenomenon of
over-weight and obesity is more present than ever. It makes the daily work of the
nurses much more demanding. On the other hand, the job of nurse is becoming
quite delicate. Let’s take as example Belgium. Due to savings, the number of nurses
for a certain number of patients is reduced. Moreover, there is a lack of nurses today
in Belgium. In addition to this lack, the number of years of study as nurse has
increased from three to four years, two years ago. It induces that in July 2022, there
will be no new nurse on the market.

Let’s now consider the different audiences that we could target.

Nursing home

The first target audience is the nursing home. Indeed, after doing a study, it
was found that in each home, several residents fall into their rooms or corridors
every week. Most of the time, these falls are not serious and the elderly person does
not need to be cared for but simply to be lifted. So our product could be very helpful
for nurses to easily lift these peoples up.

In 2015, 130,000 peoples were living in around 1400 nursing homes in

Belgium. It represents roughly 1.3 % of the total population. And that number will
continue to grow. Indeed, 12,000 new beds should appear in Belgium by 2025 to
meet the demand.[1][2]

Moreover, we have talked with a few nurses and we also have spontaneously
visited nursing homes. All people we have been talking with were enthusiastic about
the product.

At hospital

This case is more particular. In a hospital, when a person fall, the first step is
to consider the state of the person more than in a nursing home. Either, she has hurt
herself and they bring the person directly to the emergency or she only got bruises
without anything serious and nurses simply lift the person up. To do so, the “EasySit”
could ease their work again.

In Belgium, there is a bit more than 150 hospitals. It is not a pretty big market
but the number of department in hospitals is pretty high. Due to this fact, the number
of “EasySit” that a hospital could buy is higher.

At home

The last part of old people are living at home. Some are still in a pretty good
shape, some have more difficulties. In this case, the product could reach two kind of
peoples.

4
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

The first one is the home care nurse. Considering the fact that the product is
lightweight and transportable, they can have the “EasySit” with them during a visit. If
when arriving at a patient’s home, they find the patient lying on the ground, it would
have the same objective as in the nursing home.

On the other hand, a private individual could have an interest in the product.
Indeed, if a person often fall at home and is living with someone else. The second
person could use the “EasySit” to lift the person lying on the ground up. For this
purpose, the product could be either completely bought or rented. Very often, the
mutual fund is contributing in this case in order to make the product more affordable
for private individual.

As introduced before, future evolutions of our products could be more adapted

to a home purpose. For example, we can imagine a smart stretcher who can move
by itself when calling him. Arriving near the person, it could analyse the situation and
place itself. The person should then just roll on the stretcher and push on a button in
order to activate the mechanism. Obviously, a message could be sent to a contact
person or to the nurse’s agency when it has been activated. By doing so older
people could reach a safer position on their own without having to lie on the floor for
hours as it is often the case today. Indeed, when a person is down and can't get up,
some parts of the body are compressed and can block the blood flow, which is called
“Crush Syndrome”.[3] This compression syndrome leads to muscle breakdown. So
it's very interesting for the person to be able to get up quickly and this is what allows
the “EasySit”.

For all audiences, we have decided first to sell the products at one and only
one price given that this product will be partially reimbursed to private clients by
mutual insurance companies. In the future, we have the idea to introduce a two-
years lease. After that period of time, the customer can decide to either buy the
device at a lower price than the initial one or give it back to the company. In the
second case, the product is restore and continue is life-cycle either as a new lease
or on the second-hand market. The predicted life span of the “EasySit” will be
develop in the next section.

An obstacle to development is that all companies are trying to expand their

activities to become a multinational company. Obviously, the sector of the nursing
home does not avoid the internationalisation. Indeed, a lot of nursing homes are
actually part of multinational that have profitability as their top priority. It means that
the equipments are the essential one and they do not buy more complex type of
products. It also comes from the fact that they do not care about the well-being of
their employees.

To end this section, we can use a tool to analyse the competitiveness of our
business which is the Porter’s Five Forces.

Threats of entry

5
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

- In the medical sector, each new technology introduced on the market are
patented. It means that companies have to buy the patent or develop new
technologies.

- This kind of technology require investments in order to improve this technology,

which must comply with certain regulations and to reduce the cost of production.

Threats of substitutes

Due to specifications of the product, exact substitues do not exist. Indeed,

some devices with the ability to switch from a lying to a sitting position are already
available, but do not have the same function. One example is the non-magnetic
« TRIPLAN » stretcher, which is specifically designed for magnetic resonance
imaging. So thanks to our patent, the only way to develop a real substitue product is
to use other materials or mechanisms that will be described in the next section.

Power of buyers

The customers do not have a lot of power. Indeed, they cannot put pressure
by considering prices or services compared to an other company because there exist
no exact substitute product.

Power of suppliers

As for the structure of our device, a large part of it is manufactured by 3D

printing, so we will only need raw material that is not manufactured and therefore
available from many suppliers, which lowers their power. The other part, like the
wheels, have been chosen in a very common format, which once again increases
the number of suppliers.

On the other hand, the more complex components, which are the electronics
devices, like the cylinders, can be found in Asia for a very cheap price.

Competitive rivalry

- In this sector, most companies are trying to reduce the cost as much as possible
in order to sell their products at a reduced price.
- Our interest is to produce a device which is as sustainable as possible for an
acceptable price.

- In the future, other companies could try to produce a substitute of our device by
optimising all the cost in order to increase profitability. We have thus decided to
focus on updates of the product by developing new specifications.

Government regulatory constraints

A product like ours must comply with certain government regulations in order
to be placed on the market. We will therefore have to make sure that our product as
we have designed it corresponds to the various ISO standards for this type of device.

3. Description of the product

The “EasySit” is a two-position foldable stretcher on wheels that allows it to easily
look like a chair.

The product can easily be moved from one position to another automatically
thanks to different small battery-powered motors. All this is controlled by a switch
connected to an Arduino, which is an easily programmable minicomputer.

The mechanism for raising the stretcher is based on two cylinders, allowing
the whole thing to be raised to a height of 50 cm from the ground. This height was
chosen after observing several chairs in classic format. The two cylinders used are
arranged in a specific way to ensure a certain stability. They are placed on either
side of the centre line at a distance of 12 cm from it, but they extend in different
directions. This arrangement has been designed to balance the forces as much as
possible and thus stabilise the seat.

For the cylinders, it was necessary to choose between several technologies.

Indeed, there are different types of them:

- pneumatic cylinders,
- hydraulic cylinders,
- electric cylinders,
- single-acting cylinders,
- double-acting cylinders.

After looking at the specificities of each one, we turned to single-acting

electric cylinders. Indeed, the fact of being electric gives them the possibility to
function autonomously, i.e. without the contribution of human force. The price of the
device being one of the most important points, we have chosen to take simple effect
since it is a sufficient characteristic for our device and it allows us to significantly
reduce the manufacturing price of our product.[4] It is important to note that the
largest part of the manufacturing budget concerns the purchase of cylinders.

The mechanism for lifting the part in contact with the user's bust, which will
later become the backrest of the chair, is based on a motorised device allowing

Figure 2

7
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

rotation around an axis. In practice, this device is similar to the joints for front seat
backrest joints found in cars, which is illustrated in the Figure 2. In practice, the
operation is the same, however we have used a smaller size format, in order to
minimise the thickness of our device. It was also necessary to take a motorised
version of this device as everything must be automatic.

The part in contact with the calves and feet has a totally passive mechanics
from an electrical point of view. Indeed, this part will simply bend using gravity and
the weight of the lower legs. This part is fixed to the central part by using a simple
fixing allowing a rotation. This part also has two small wooden wheels 2 cm in
diameter at the end. This makes it easier to contact the ground when the device
starts to ascend and thus avoids scratching the ground.

As for the base of the “EasySit”, we have chosen to use 25 mm square tubes
with a thickness of 2 mm. To reduce the price and be totally free in design, we
decided to manufacture them by 3D printing, using laser sintering technology. The
material chosen is alumina powder, which is a mixture of polyamide and aluminium.
This material offers the advantage of being able to produce parts that are both very
solid and very flexible. It has a metal-like appearance and is printed by laser
sintering with 60 µm alumina particles. The only disadvantage of using alumina is
that printed objects with various finishes such as polishing or grinding are required.
[5] In total, the baseplate has a length of:

- backrest length: 950 mm,

- length of the central part: 500 mm,
- length of the lower part: 450 mm,
- stretcher width: 500 mm.

That is, 950*2 + 500*2 + 450*2 + 500*2 = 4800 mm. These lengths were
chosen based on the average proportions of the human being. To fix the end bars we
also printed square tube fittings at right angles in 3D, as shown in the Figure 3.

Figure 3

The part on which the individual will rest is made of a braided PVC canvas, as
shown in the Figure 4. This material and manufacturing technique have been chosen
to allow a certain flexibility that is essential to make it possible for each part to be
folded.

8
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

Figure 4

These different materials have also been chosen to allow a minimum of

comfort while minimising at most as possible the net weight of the device. Indeed,
minimising the net weight simplifies its transport and reduces the power required by
the engines.

It is also possible to slightly improve comfort thanks to some optional modules

such as:

- straps to be attached to the top of the backrest, to allow the person to be held and
thus prevent him/her from falling during transport,
- footrests to be fixed on the bottom of the “EasySit”,
- different pads to be fixed on high pressure areas such as the head, buttocks,...

As mentioned above, the entire electronics is controlled by a switch

connected to an Arduino Nano, both of which are attached to the armature in such a
way that they can be easily accessed and thus launch the process. We decided to
use this kind of minicomputer because it is powerful enough for the task being
asked, cheap (a few euros) and very compact (43mm x 18mm).

As can be seen in the first schemes, the foldable part is connected to another
unit that will allow the transport of the “EasySit”. Indeed, it is on this part that the
main wheels are located. The two parts are connected by the two cylinders and rest
one on top of the other when the whole thing is unfolded. This second set is
therefore made up of:

- eight 45 mm diameter polyurethane wheels placed symmetrically on either side of

the stretcher,
- two square tubes of 15 mm side, 2 mm thick and 540 mm long,
- two square tubes of 15 mm side, 2 mm thick and 500 mm long, with four
perforated holes to fix the wheels,
- four square tube fittings at right angles printed in 3D.

In order to prevent the wheels and frame from being disturbing when the
patient is placed on the vehicle, a fairly simple device, described on Figure 5, is
supplied with it. This one is fixed to the “EasySit” simply by placing it on it. As for

9
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

manufacturing, this part is not printed in 3D, but it is simply an aluminum plate folded
in the desired way.

Figure 5

The “EasySit” is also very easy to store thanks to its folding mode. This one is
composed of a manual part and a motorised part. Indeed, in order to fold it as well as
possible, it is necessary that the user manually folds the lower part on the central
part. He can then activate the folding mode with the switch and the backrest will then
fold back over to the other two parts.

In total, our product is therefore composed of:

- 1 Arduino Nano,
- 1 nine-volt batteries,
- 2 single-acting electric cylinders,
- 1 motorised mechanism to rotate the backrest,
- 4800 mm of square tubes of 25 mm side and 2 mm thick,
- 2080 mm of square tubes of 15 mm side and 2 mm thick,
- 4 square tube fittings in right angle printed in 3D allowing to assemble 25 mm side
tubes,
- 4 square tube fittings in right angle printed in 3D allowing to assemble tubes of 15
mm side,
- 8 polyurethane wheels 45 mm in diameter,
- 2 wooden wheels 2 cm in diameter,
- 1.47 m2 of braided PVC canvas.

4. Questions
A. What is the source of the competitive advantage of the
project?

- The product “EasySit” is folding and transportable. A huge advantage compared to

other stretchers.
- It is developed to require the help of only one person to lift the patient up. It is very
useful in nursing home where the staff is more and more reduced due to
profitability.
- In the future, we can imagine that the stretcher could move by itself. By learning
the person how to roll on it, the person would get to the seated position by himself.

Reaching a seated position is safe and allow the person to get a grip on herself. After
that, the person can easily be moved in his or her room and then in the bed.

B. Where does the business sit in the life-cycle and what are
the issues to address in this phase?

At this stage, the business still sit at the development phase. We are working at the
same time on the development of the product itself and on the marketing.

The development part is pretty time-consuming in order to achieve something

that verify all our expectations. The main points are the lightness, the choice of the
mechanism and of the materials. The means of production that we can use is also an
important point to consider. Working with doctors and nurses could be very helpful at
this moment.

On the other hand, the marketing phase is very complex because that is a
new product and therefore no demand figures are available. The main process is to
analyse the way of selling the product. We have to define the right target, to study
the companies with which we can be in competition, to be able to define the risks,
etc. In order to identify the positive and negative aspects, both internal and external
to our start up, we have created a SWOT chart available in the Appendix A.

C. What are the risks associated with the project (probability

and importance)?

A very important part in the development of the product and the marketing is
analysing the risk assessment. Different kind of risks have to be studied.

11
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

Economic risk:

- Hospitals could not be very interested in this product because they could think that
this is a gadget. However, the hospital market is not our main potential market.

- The product is mainly develop to ease the work of the nurses and to help the old
people at home. The problem is that in some countries, they do not really care
about the condition of the nurses and so there will be no demand. It could be a
brake on the expansion out of Belgium. It is then important to know that the
probability of such a risk exist.

Technological risk:

- There is a risk that if one of the electric cylinders fails due to a malfunction, the
person would tip over to the side of the failed cylinder and could be injured if it is in
the up position.

- As for the motorised joint between the backrest and the central part, if this breaks
down, the person could tip backwards when the system is raised and be slightly
injured.

Such failures may be due to poor maintenance or a battery that is no longer

operational. To avoid the battery problem, a red light in the battery will come on when
the power level is too low.

- PVC canvas can wear out and aluminium can be subject to fatigue over time.
In the end, the probability of failure is highly dependent on the frequency of
use. However, these various problems will only appear at the end of the product's
life, which is estimated at a minimum of twenty years. We have studied the
resistance of this product to have this long lifespan so that the investment made by
nursing homes is quite profitable. In case of failure, replacement and repair of parts
is also possible.

In order to be sure that the device is working properly, it should be tested

every 6 months as described in the operating instructions. This ensures that the
device has not been damaged over time.

5. Business model canvas

See table in Appendix B.

Customer segments
The “EasySit” will reach a large type of audience.
- Nursing homes
- Hospitals whatever the departments.
- Mutual fund
- Home care nurse companies
- Private individual
- Store specialised in the sale of medical products
- Dispensers of medical products such as Medi-secur

Value propositions
All the audiences are proposing services to old people. The objectives of our product
is to help them in their work.

Here is a list of values:

- Raise a person up into a safe seated position

- Avoid the development of “Crush Syndrome” »
- Develop to be automatic. The only thing to do is bring the device to the the fallen
person. Some people may also need a little help to get on the stretcher.
- Lightweight and transportable
- Focus on sustainability
- Ease the work of nurses. While 2-3 nurses are necessary now to raise a person,
one is enough using the “EasySit”.

Channels
We will have one building where there will be the production site and administrative
offices. To distribute the product, we will have representatives whose job is to visit
mainly nursing homes, home care nurse companies and mutual fund. We will also
collaborate with dispensers of medical products in order to reach more people.

13
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

In order to reach private individuals, we will have representatives who will

offer these devices in stores selling medical devices such as wheelchairs.

Finally, we will, of course, develop a website. The goals of this one are to
present the product, to be able to order the product and to offer an after-sale service.

Customer relationship
All nursing homes, hospitals, mutual fund and shops that have bought our product
will be in our customer database. Once a year, we will contact each of them by email
in order to have a feedback of the product. This will mainly help the R&D and the
marketing departments.

Distributors of medical products will be among the sales partners. Many

health care institutions obtain their supplies through these distributors. This will allow
us to expand our market.

The after-sales service will work through two channels.

- Phone: As the product is not dangerous for the health, the telephone-lines will not
be open 24/7 but only during office hours. The telephone line will be free and the
personnel will answer to the customer questions. (Personal assistance)

- Internet: The website will propose customer to ask all their questions by interaction
with the system in order to identified the real problem. We're going to develop a
bot that will be able to answer more basic questions and will be accessible 24/7.
For more complex questions, they will then be treated as quick as possible by a
qualified personnel member. Moreover, customers will be able to send an e-mail to
interact with the company.

Revenue stream
We will offer different pricing to each customer segment:

- A same fixed price is defined for the nursing homes, the hospitals and the mutual
fund, which is a first kind of B2B.

- This price is a bit reduced for the shops as they will directly sell it to other
customers. It is so another kind of B2B.

- Finally, private individuals could buy it on the website. Actually there will be two
possibilities to acquire the “EasySit”, either with a 2-year lease, or by buying it
directly.

Key ressources
The key resources are the building block describing the most important assets
needed to make a business model work. These ressources are essential to proper
functioning of the company, given that it is only through them that a company can

14
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

generate revenues. They can be owned by the company, leased or acquired from
key partners. They are all described below:
- Financial ressources
The company of course needs money in order to buy the raw materials to
produce the product, like the 3D printer. Moreover, to be able to produce the device,
a factory is necessary and this one can either be leased or bought. Money is also
essential to pay the people working in the factory and to buy or lease the machine
used in production. It's also gonna take money to set up the website.

Another really important source of expense and thus use of financial

resources is the purchase of the patent. Indeed this will allow us to secure our idea
and thus prevent a commercial competition to appear.

- Physical ressources
The main physical ressources is the factory. It is the head office of the
company. After that, machines are necessary to produce the device. It will also
require a workspace for administration and therefore all the office equipment that
goes with it.
- Human ressources
Qualified staff is more than necessary in the company:
• Engineers are conceiving the product and are working in updates in the R&D
department.
• Technicians are compulsory to produce the device itself.
• Manager are supervising all teams. They are responsible of the efficiency of the
different teams and have to achieve the results set by the board of directors.
• Trade delegates will meet the potentiel customers and show them all the
advantages of our product
Operators are dealing with administrative work and they are in direct contact with the
customers.
- Intellectual ressources
The intellectual ressources are considering the patents. In order to protect our
product, it has to be patented.
- Key partners
These people are not part of the company but they are offering services to the
company. It is studied more in details later.

To avoid high initial costs and the risk of losing this investment if the product
does not sell, we will rent 3D printers in the first step. This will allow us to see how
the start up behaves. If everything goes as planned, we will buy our own 3D printers.
So another partner will be the company that rents the printers.

15
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

Key activities
- Marketing: Of course, the marketing is very important for a company. It allows to
improve the sales by convincing that our product has to be bought.
- Selling: To earn money, the company has to sell his product. It is made through
three ways : internet, shops of medical devices and representatives

- After-sale service: This service is answering the questions of the customers and is
trying to solve their issues.

- R&D activities: By collections informations from “EasySit” users, the R&D

department has to improve the product to satisfy all the expectations and to solve
the issues. This department is also important to develop variants of the product in
order to reach an other audience or to offer solutions with different prices.

Key partnerships
- Doctors: We will be working with doctor in order to develop a product which is safe
and comfortable for the patient. For example, the doctors can help to find the best
position before moving on the stretchers.
- Managers of hospitals and nursing homes: They will be the buyers
- Nurses: Being the main users of our product, we definitely want that they feel
comfortable with the “EasySit”. We will often ask them feedbacks in order to
improve the product.

- Patients: Thanks to satisfaction survey, we will collect informations from an other

point of view to improve the product.

Cost structure
The different costs of the company are:

- The staff salaries, which are mainly fixed costs

- The production cost, like the raw materials, the machine, etc. These are variable
costs that depend on the global market and therefore on supply and demand.

We will try to reduce the cost as much as possible while keeping a high quality
product. The most expensive key ressources are the human ressources and more
particularly the engineers and the representatives of the firm.

16
JOLIS Martin RADOUX Alexandre ZANDONA Yannick

6. Conclusion
In conclusion, we have seen that our product could have great commercial potential
given the increase in life expectancy and its consequences on the population.

Indeed, the “EasySit”, being an excellent product for effortless recovery, will
put an end to nurses' sick leave for a kidney tour when they have relieved a patient.
It will also avoid the physiological consequences of "Crush Syndrome" due to long-
term immobilisation for people who have fallen at home. It also adds a reassuring
psychological aspect for elderly couples.

In addition, this product is made with very common manufacturing elements

which makes it inexpensive to manufacture and purchase.

All these positive points predict a bright commercial future for this new device,
the “EasySit”.
