Background
Company Overview
GyroGear is an award-winning startup, developing intelligent gloves to restore independence
and quality of life for patients suffering with hand tremors (Parkinson’s and Essential Tremor).
Future impact will include digital health, rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
The company was founded in 2016 by Dr Faii Ong, who obtained his medical degree from Imperial
College, London. Seeing a huge gap in the treatment of debilitating Parkinson’s Disease and
Essential Tremor (ET), Dr Ong invented a medical wearable to give the 200M sufferers globally
(prevalence to double by 2030) a chance to live a normal life again.
The GyroGlove has been featured on the BBC, Reuters, Popular Science, MIT Tech Review and
other global publications. GyroGear won first runner up out of 7500+ competing entries at
Slingshot 2020, an international start-up competition run by Enterprise Singapore.

The Product
“Hope in a glove to get you back to doing what you love”

The GyroGear story began in 2014 when Dr Ong was still a medical trainee and member of a team
caring for a 103-year-old woman in a London hospital. Stumped by the woman’s significant
weight loss and increasing frailty, Dr. Ong discovered the answer by observing the patient at
lunch, and watching as tremors resulted in most of her soup spilling onto her bed covers and
hospital gown.
Querying the duty nurses, he was told: “Well, she’s a hundred and three, forgets you in five
minutes, has those really bad shakes, and her medications have stopped working. There’s nothing
we can do.” Taken aback, Dr Ong resolved to find a solution. After exploring several potential
solutions, he concluded that using mechanical gyroscopes provided the best opportunity to
instantaneously and proportionally resist a person’s hand movement. His early prototype of
GyroGlove, proved this instinct correct. In benchtop tests, the team found the glove reduced
tremors by up to 90 percent.
GyroGlove’s design is simple. It uses a custom designed, dynamically adjustable gyroscope, which
is enclosed in a light weight casing and is affixed to the back of the hand, by a harness that is
attached to the glove’s material. When the device is switched on, the battery-powered gyroscope
begins spinning, thereby pushing back against the wearer’s movements as the gyroscope tries
to right itself.

Brand Positioning
Unique Selling Point

“Regain independence and freedom with GyroGlove”

Imagine the frustration and helplessness of having hands that shake so much, to the extent
where mundane daily tasks such as eating and drinking become difficult or impossible.
Worldwide, there are approximately 10 million Parkinson’s patients, and an additional 200 million
people with Essential Tremor - causing patients’ hands to shake so much that daily tasks such as
eating and drinking become difficult or impossible.
GyroGear’s solution is to mount a gyroscope on the back of the hand which is much like a
spinning top that will always stay upright as long as it’s spinning. This makes the wearer’s hand
stay level while the flywheel is rotating. By constantly spinning at such a high speed, the glove
will provide a steadying force and put muscles at ease so patients can regain control of their
hands, giving them the freedom to get on with their daily tasks, as well as doing what they love.
The GyroGlove can help reduce hand tremors and restore regular activity to users. This will make
a drastic difference as to whether someone is able to independently look after themselves
without assistance. The glove works without requiring a doctor to fine-tune the device to each
individual patient, or having a bulky design that might further stigmatize those already
embarrassed by their tremors. And unlike products like Liftware spoon or the ArcPen, the
GyroGlove is not a proprietary solution using just one tool. By wearing the GyroGlove, everything
becomes easier for those suffering from tremors.
Target Market
People suffering from PD and ET for whom hand tremor is the most disabling symptom of the
disease. People suffering from PD are mostly over their 50s, evenly displayed in both men and
women. ET is a less researched disease, often having hereditary nature, which means that it can
affect one or more members of the same family. Hand tremors can start affecting ET patients as
early as the first decade of their life (~20%), second decade (~25%). GyroGear is targeting Australia,
Asia, USA, EU and UK markets. We are working on establishing both B2B and B2C channels to
access our customers.
