KERTO
KERTO-S (LVL)
INTRODUCTION
The perfect choice for long spans. Kerto-S
unites excellent technical performance with
ease of use. Kerto-S is the perfect choice
for beams whatever the specification,
achieving long spans with minimal
deflection.
KERTO-Q (LVL)
Manufactured in the same way as Kerto-S,
but with some veneers laid crossways. As a
result Kerto-Q is renowned for its
dimensional stability and in particular
where high compression strength is
required. Kerto-Q is ideal for use as a
rimboard.

The strength of Kerto lies in the manufacturing process. Produced from 3mm thick rotary peeled softwood veneers which are then
glued together to form continuous 1.8 or 2.5 metre wide strips in thickness from 21 to 90mm and a maximum length of 26m.
The result is an engineered wood product that maintains the natural beauty of wood whilst being dimensionally strong enough for all
types of construction applications.

FINNFRAME FLOOR PERFORMANCE AND DESIGN
FLOOR PERFORMANCE
The performance of a floor is a subjective matter, expectations differ significantly between individuals. The main performance criteria
being the quietness and amount of deflection. Minimum standards are governed by current legislation but may not give the personal
expected performance.
The most important factor influencing floor performance is stiffness. Improving stiffness decreases deflection, bounce and vibration.
Another factor in performance is the mass of the floor. Increasing the mass improves the impact
sound properties of floors. However, a floor with low stiffness and a high mass can lead to vibration problems.
Note:
All design criteria taken from British Standards and Eurocode 5.

WEIGHTS OF MATERIAL
In any floor design the weights of the applied loads must be calculated. The permanent loads or dead loads are those that form the structure
and finishes. The imposed or live loads are those considered appropriate for the use of the floor such as furniture or human foot traffic.

a. Finnforest recommend that the decking is to be glued and fixed in g. Avoid using unspecified nails into the sides of the flange as this can

b. Deeper I-joists will perform better than shallower I-joists due to better tables on page 25.
deflection performance.
c. The depth of the floor decking influences performance with deeper
floor decking improving stiffness.
d. Appropriate strutting of the joists may increase the floor stiffness.
Consult Finnforest for advice (0800 00 44 44).
e. Correct bearing line and level is essential for in service performance.
f. When using joist hangers ensure the correct joist hanger matched to
joist type is used and that all nails are correctly specified and used.

KERTO-S (LVL) DESIGN VALUES
Kerto-S (LVL) unites excellent technical performance with ease of use. Strength,
dimensional precision and stability are the essential qualities of Kerto-S (LVL). As
a beam it is the perfect choice whenever the requirements include long spans and
minimal deflection. Kerto-S (LVL) is also ideal for use as elements in roofs, floors
and walls such as purlins, beams, joists and lintels.

Notes:
1. Minimum allowable bearing length is 38mm for end bearings and 89mm for intermediate bearings.
For Masonary Construction see detail M9.
2. Table values are based on a support with an allowable bearing stress of 3.2 N/mm2.
If a lower strength support is used, appropriate bearing lengths must be calculated.
3. Lateral restraint must be provided at end bearings.
Notes:
1. Beam span is defined as clear span (between support points).
2. The tabulated values are loads (kN/m) that can be applied to the beam
in addition to the self weight of the beam.
3. Proper bearing must be provided. Bearing length must be checked for
support reaction with the minimum bearing table above.
4. To prevent buckling, lateral restraint is required on the compression
edge of Kerto-S beams at 600mm centres or closer. This restraint is
normally provided by decking and or framing members. Beams that are
not laterally supported at 600mm centres or less require special design.

SOUND DEFINITIONS
AIRBORNE IMPACT
Airborne sounds are audible noises such as: talking, music, Impact sounds are sound transmissions produced when a
television etc. Airborne sound insulation of party floors and construction element vibrates due to direct impact such as
walls is measured as the difference between the noise source walking or jumping. Impact sound is measured as the level of
in one dwelling and the noise received in the adjacent noise received from one dwelling to the next. The lower the
dwelling. The higher the airborne sound value, the better the impact sound value between dwellings the better the impact
