Module 2: The Elements in the Periodic Table

ANSWER SHEET

LABORATORY ACTIVITY

I. Objectives:
A. To be able to draw models that show atoms or ions;
B. To be able to use information about the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons to:
1. identify an element and its position on the periodic table
2. determine if the model is for an atom or an ion;
3. write completely the electron configuration, orbital diagram, and noble gas configuration;
and
C. To be able to predict how changing the number of protons, neutrons, or electrons will change the
element, the charge, and the mass of an atom or ion.

II. Materials
Phet Simulator (Build an Atom) computer/laptop

III. Procedure
1. Click the website in the LABORATORY TIME! Section entitled “Build an Atom” and click Play, then
select Symbol. Click on the two green plus signs to open all windows.
2. Use the tools to build any three different atoms of elements and fill in the information about them below
in the Data and Results table. Afterwhich, present the Electron Configuration, Orbital Diagram and Noble
Gas Configuration of your atom and write the symbol being shown in your screen.

2. Create a Helium (He) atom (2 protons, 2 neutrons, 2 electrons). Follow the directions in the table below
then observe what happens. Complete the table below. You need to RESET to the original Helium (He)
atom after you make each change!
