3D Geological Modeling Chapter 27 – Well Completion

Well Completion Design

Well completion consists of sealing off a drilled well in preparation for
production. After the drilling equipment has been removed from the
borehole, the well is fitted with, as appropriate: liner, tubing, valves, and
safety and flow-control equipment. It includes setting and cementing the
casing, perforating it, and installing pumping equipment or a production
tree, and stimulating or pumping.

Casing, liner and tubing are designed on the well completion canvas.
Casing is set from the wellhead, or from the well top, reaching the required
depth. A liner is similar to a casing but does not extend to the wellhead.
Instead it hangs on the innermost casing. Tubing is used to reduce the flow
cross-sectional area and is set inside the casing. Packers are used to isolate
the annulus (space between the wellbore and casing or between casing and
tubing) from the production conduit. Three well tests allow the properties
of the well to be adjusted given measured input data.

There are different ways to stimulate a well to increase the flow. To

create a perforation, a gun is run into the wellbore. This perforates any
casing/liner, thus increasing the flow into the well. Other stimulation
techniques include squeeze and stimulation. When a part of the well is
sealed off, a plugback is set to obstruct any flow from the bottom section
of a well.

Some wells are equipped with flow control items and artificial lift
equipment to enhance flow performance. These items include chokes,
inflow valves, gas lift valves and pumps.

How to add completions to the schematic

1. In the Processes pane, open well engineering and select Well
completion design. The Well completion design toolbar appears.
2. Open the Wells folder in the Input pane.
3. Click on a well.
