With the 2017 Edition of ASME Code Section VIII, Division 1 the alternative calculation
procedure Appendix 1-10 for nozzles has been deleted. This may cause difficulties when
using calculations based on older editions under the new one. Problems might now occur
with nozzles calculated with Appendix 1-10, although the standard procedures UG-37 or
Appendix 1-7 would have been applicable.

Let´s look at this issue step by step. The standard procedure – in short – was as follows: For
nozzles up to 1/2 of the vessel diameter (up to 1/3 with larger vessels) the reinforcement
calculation according to UG-37 was used. Larger nozzles up to 70% of the vessel diameter
were covered by Appendix 1-7. For nozzles exceeding this 70% vessel diameter Appendix
1-10 was available.

Additionally to this a welcome option was the possibility to use Appendix 1-10 as an
alternative for ALL nozzle sizes. This was often done with vessels featuring limited wall
thickness reserves, since the more sophisticated method made more economical solutions
possible. Especially for nozzles near a discontinuity (end of shell) Appendix 1-10 was
applied, because the areas of reinforcement were closer to the nozzle and the reinforcing
effect of the nozzle neck itself was taken more into account. Those designs often failed using
the traditional UG-37 area replacement procedure.

If an old Edition 2015 design calculation is to be used again now for a new vessel according
to Edition 2017, all Appendix 1-10 calculated nozzles need to be thoroughly looked at. If the
nozzle/vessel ratio is also covered by UG-37 or Appendix 1-7, their conservative rules have
to be applied – as a result design changes may be necessary.

(nozzle/vessel > 0.7), paragraph U-2(g) can be applied. This paragraph permits the use of
design procedures outside of Section VIII, Division 1, if no rules for a specific design (now
that Appendix 1-10 is deleted) are offered there. When using U-2(g) you shall make sure,
however, that the safety level of Section VIII-1 is adhered to and the Authorized Inspector
has no objections. For this purpose ASME Code Division 2 can be referred to, whose nozzle
calculation procedure is more or less the same as the old Appendix 1-10. Thus the original
nozzle design can be kept.

Since small openings meeting the scope of UG-37 or Appendix 1-7 have to be calculated
with those, taking rules from other standards under paragraph U-2(g) is not permissible. As
a last resort for such cases the use of Code Case 2695 is a possible way to go. It allows,
under certain conditions, applying design procedures taken from Section VIII, Division 2 for
Section VIII, Division 1 vessels, hence – as already mentioned above – the old Appendix 1-
10. However, the golden rule with Code Cases is: Use them sparingly! Code Cases have to
be accepted by the Authorized Inspector, the user and the local jurisdiction. However, if all
parties agree, Code Case 2695 offers even some more interesting options to the designer
additionally to the nozzle procedure.

Last but not least and not entirely selflessly, a final note regarding ASME Code Section
VIII, Division 2. For anyone interested in the design options offered by these “Alternate
Rules”, the upcoming ASME seminar scheduled for April in Brussels might be
recommended. PD714 - BPV Code, Section VIII, Division 2: Design & Fabrication of

Thanks for the info, actually i'm checking a calculation for a horizontal vessel

reinforcement, it has 22 in of inside diameter, his larger nozzle has 4 in nominal pipe size. The manufacturer
is using the PV elite software but they calculate those nozzle with the 2015 code version using appendix 1-7
and 1-10. Now let me see if i am right: from now the design can't be used with app 1-17 unless that ratio
override 0,5? i hope you kindly resolve that question, it makes me mad to be honest.

Hello Hector,
Almost right. Since the 2017 Edition does not offer design formulas for nozzles exceeding an 0.7 ratio,
paragraph U-2(g) has to be applied for "very" large nozzles. In such a case the design procedure
taken from Section VIII, Division 2 (similar to App. 1-10) could be used.
However, since the 4" nozzle in your 22" vessel falls perfectly within the range of UG-37, there…voir
