Cambridge Senior Mathematics:
Australian Curriculum/VCE
builds on a proven teaching and
learning formula to support the new
AC/VCE Mathematics Study Designs
for implementation in 2016.

AUTHORITATIVE INTERPRETATION OF THE CURRICULUM

This series has been created by an author team, led by Michael Evans and
Peter Jones, with unrivalled expertise in writing examples and problems to
prepare students for exams, as well as proven experience interpreting the
Australian Curriculum and VCE Study Designs for VCE students.

PROVEN SUCCESSFUL APPROACH

Developed from the popular Essential Mathematics VCE series, the new series
combines logical topic development with a wealth of examples, exercises,
exam-style questions and a focus on what is important to guide students to
VCE success.

POWERFUL INTEGRATED DIGITAL RESOURCES

A new level of digital support, powered by Cambridge HOTmaths, allows
effortless and immediate navigation within the Interactive Textbook to
interactive animations, video examples, complete worked solutions,
worksheets, automarked questions, online testing and a powerful Learning
Management System (LMS).
CAREFULLY DEVELOPED QUESTIONS
Carefully developed creative and rigorous questions help students understand
concepts and develop mathematical skills, apply maths to real life and prepare
for exams. Drawing on the successful Essential Mathematics VCE style, the
questions are fully updated for the new study designs and latest exams.

VIDEO EXAMPLES
Videos for the most important worked examples and concepts support
students to develop a deep understanding of fundamental skills and enable
them to work independently.

WORKED SOLUTIONS
Comprehensive worked solutions for all questions in the print textbook are
provided in the Interactive Textbook as an option that teachers can choose to
make available to students.

CALCULATOR ACTIVITIES, EXAMPLES AND GUIDES

With TI-Nspire CAS CX OS4 and Casio ClassPad II support built in to the
student textbook, no additional calculator material is required. General guides
on the calculators are provided online or in the General and Further textbooks.
Technology-free questions are provided in Mathematical Methods and
Specialist to avoid reliance on CAS calculators.

EXTENSIVE REVISION
The Mathematical Methods, Further and Specialist student texts each include
a number of revision chapters, with extra questions on groups of chapters
plus one chapter that revises the whole book. In addition, Year 11 General
and Maths Methods students can access Years 9 and 10 HOTmaths lessons
through their online textbook to revise required prior knowledge.

342 Chapter 9: Probability

Example 19
In Stephen’s class 12 students study Chinese, 20 study French, and 8 study both Chinese
and French.
a Given that a student in his class studies Chinese (C), what is the probability that they
also study French (F)?
b Given that a student in his class studies French, what is the probability that they also
study Chinese?

Solution Explanation
C F Display the information in the question in a Venn
diagram. The numbers in brackets indicate the
number of elements in each region.
(4) (8) (12)
If we know that the student studies Chinese, the
sample space is restricted to those 12 students. From
the Venn diagram we can see that 8 of these students
8 2 also study French.
a Pr(F | C) = =
12 3
If we know that the student studies French, the
8 2 sample space is restricted to those 20 students. From
b Pr(C | F) = =
20 5 the Venn diagram we can see that 8 of these students
also study Chinese.

This example clearly demonstrates that, in general, Pr(A | B) Pr(B | A). So care needs to be
taken when determining conditional probabilities.
Conditional probabilities can also be calculated from a table, as shown in Example 20.
With TI-Nspire and Casio ClassPad support built in Example 20
to all student textbooks, no additional calculator 500 people were questioned and classified according to age and whether or not they
material is required. regularly use social media. The results are shown in the table.

Do you regularly use social media?

Age < 25 Age ≥ 25 Total

Yes 200 100 300
No 40 160 200
Total 240 260 500

One person is selected at random from these 500. Given that the selected person is less
than 25 years of age, what is the probability that they regularly use social media?

Solution Explanation
200 5
Pr(Yes | Age < 25) = = If we know the person is less than 25 years old, then
240 6
the sample space is restricted to those 240 people.
Of these, 200 regularly use social media.

THE INTERACTIVE TEXTBOOK POWERED BY HOTMATHS

The Interactive Textbook, powered by Cambridge HOTmaths, is an online version of the student
text optimised to be read on screen through an internet browser.
It provides effortless and immediate access to a host of interactive features to enhance the
teaching and learning experience of the student text. Used with the Online Teaching Suite,
the Interactive Textbook enables teachers to monitor student progress through the learning
management system and use the reporting function.

Features include:

• video demonstrations of key worked examples in the student text

• interactive widgets that visually represent and reinforce maths concepts
• worked solutions for every question in the print textbook (if made available by the teacher)
• pop-up definitions linked to the searchable online mathematics dictionary/index
• auto-marked multiple-choice questions with progress tracker
• printable skillsheets and worksheets including extended response questions
• online tests assigned to students by the teacher using the Online Teaching Suite
• HOTmaths tasks and message functions
• access to the PDF Textbook, a downloadable version of the student text, with note-taking
and bookmarking enabled. It is accessed using the same unique 16-character code used
to access the Interactive Textbook.

The Interactive Textbook powered by HOTmaths is accessed using a unique 16-character

code supplied on purchase. The Interactive Textbook is provided with the print textbook, or is

book with its rich digital resources.
• The Online Teaching Suite provides full access to the Interactive and PDF Textbooks.
• An online Test Generator allows you to create customised tests from a huge bank of
questions. Tests can be printed or assigned online for automarking, and are suitable for
assessment, homework tasks, practice quizzes and trial exams. Teachers can share their
customised tests with others in the school, building a whole-school assessment bank.
Ready-made tests are also available.
• When linked to students using the Interactive Textbook online, the Online Teaching Suite
records students scores on practice quizzes and online tests, and reports individual and
class progress (reports can be printed to provide feedback). Data from student Interactive
