Construction Method of First Stage of Headrace

and Gate Shaft
The works under this section is part of head pivot of headrace tunnel, which includes
tunnel inlet, headrace tunnel with 200 m length and the gate shaft. The intake with trash
rack is structure of reinforced and concreted, in length of 17 m; the head race tunnel is
200 m long, shaped as round section lined by reinforced concrete with thickness of 80 cm
and its diameter is 4.50 after concrete lining. The gate control shaft is of concreted which
is excavated as 10.5 lin.m in section diameter and 57.5 lin.m in depth.

Main Quantities of the Irrigation Tunnel are as follows :

Common Excavation : 18.412 Cum
Open Rock Excavation : 28.733 Cum
Tunnel Excavation : 12.626 Cum
Shaft Excavation : 4.897 Cum.
Shotcrete : 284 Cum
Concrete Placement : 12.648 Cum
Anchor bar : 1.283 Cum
Reinforcement fabrication and installation : 1.413 Tonne
Backfill grouting : 1.940 Tonne
Consolidation grouting : 397 Tonne

Construction of intake will be deemed as an adjustable item for its small quantities and
will be carried out until completion of diversion tunnel excavation.
As diversion tunnel excavation completed, earth & rock excavation for intake will
commence immediately. Headrace tunnel excavation is executed after completion of
tunnel portal treatment. The completed headrace tunnel shall be deemed as a construction
access to carry out gate shaft and concrete placement construction. Finally concrete
placement for headrace tunnel and intake structures will be completed.

Auxilary facilities such as water/air pipe and power line for tunnel excavation. A
mobile air compressor with capacity of 20 Cum will be intalled separately at intake and
gate shaft directly to rovide air to the otilizing equipment on site.
The water pipe to joint the main water system will be laid to the intake and gate shaft
construction areas.
The power line will be laid to the tunnel floor above and extends with tunnel excavation
progress. Axial ventilator will be installed for ventilation in tunnel
The tunnel portal will be treated with anchor bolt and shotcrete. Incase the rock around
portal is loose, concrete lining will be carried out to treat the portal.

 Construction method

Gate shaft Excavation.

Pilot excavation with 2 m diameter is adopted for construction gate shaft. In the
execution of pilot excavation, hole is drilled by hand drill, charged manually and blasted
by detonator. The blasted materials is loaded manually and lift on to the ground, loading
by excavator on to dump truck to the disposal area.
For purpose of safety construction, the shaft mouth should be locked when the shaft
shapped, and necessary safety support in such of shotcreting or placing concrete will be
taken.
