Potential and Kinetic Energy

Identify each of the following forms of energy as either potential energy (P) or kinetic energy (K).
k
_____ Sound p
_____ Nuclear k
_____ Elastic k
_____ Electric
p
_____ Chemical p
_____ k
Gravitational _____ Thermal k
_____ Electromagnetic
a. Choose one of the above forms of potential energy and describe why it fits in this category.
Chemical energy fits the category of potential energy because, potential energy in a nutshell is stored energy that is ready to go
and chemical energy is energy stored in connections(the bonds) between tiny parts of a substance(molecules)

b. Choose one of the above forms of kinetic energy and describe why it fits in this category.
Kinetic energy , simply put is energy something has because of motion , that being said electrical energy fits this category
because it is energy gained from moving electrons.

Forms of Energy
Match the energy form(s) to the description provided. Questions may have more than one answer. Pick the
form(s) of energy most clearly demonstrated.

gravitational
_____________1. A boulder resting at the top of a hill a. Translational motion
radiant
_____________2. Release of energy from the Sun b. Electric

Transformation of Energy
Use the following forms of energy to fill in the table below: rotational motion, translational motion, electric,
thermal, electromagnetic, chemical, nuclear, and sound. The first one has been done for you.

Transformation of Energy II
Describe a scenario with the following energy transformations (do not include examples from the table
above):
a. Electric energy being converted into sound energy

An example of this would be a loud speaker, as the electricity flows back and forth in the wires the electromagnet either attracts or repels
permanent magnet , this moves the coil back and forth pushing the loud speaker cone the vibration causes compressionn in the air column and
hence sound waves are produced
b. Chemical energy being converted to motion energy
An example of this would be your body which converts chemical energy in the form of nutrients into motion energy for movement

c. Thermal energy being converted to sound energy

An example of this would be an electric kettle , when you turn it on from the time you press the button to the time it boils
you hear the sounds coming from the kettle

d. Gravitational potential energy being converted to motion energy

Objects located on a table have Gravitational Potential energy due to their relative position pn the earths centre of mass
if an object is knocked off the table gravitational potential energy transforms into motion energy

e. Electric energy being converted into electromagnetic energy

An example of this would be Electrical energy from a light bbulb being converted into electromagnetic energy in the form of light
