What This Module is About

Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or

algorithm: It is about understanding (William Paul Thurston, American
Mathematician). In order to understand Mathematics, it must find
relevance in the experiences and life of the learners. When problems
and questions are interconnected with real – life situations, it is giving
importance and meaning to the life of the learners which enables them to
appreciate the beauty and power of analysis and reasoning through their
experiences.

The 21st century learners are enthusiastic, creative and capable of

analyzing every situation to come up with a good judgement. Hence, this
module is designed to cater the needs of the learner to improve in the
field of mathematics.

The presentations in this module are simple. The competencies

are aligned with the requirements of the Department of Education. They
unfold the concepts and skills in an easy – to – understand ways. The
problem situations and illustrations are informative and socially –
oriented. This module offers challenges to equip the learners as they get
ready for Math in the next level.

Lesson Solving Real-Life

1 Problems Involving
GCF and LCM
In this lesson, we are going to solve real-life problems involving
GCF or LCM of two given numbers.

What’s In

Can you give the GCF of 10 and 15?

What method can you use in finding the GCF?
Show your answer.
10 = 2x5
15 = 3x5
The GCF is 5

Give the LCM of 8 and 16

What method is the easiest for you?
What is your answer? Show your solution

2 8 16
2 4 8
2 2 4
2 1 2
1 1

The LCM is 2x2x2x2. That is 16.

Did you find it easy to answer?

How did you come up with your answer?
Can you tell the steps in finding the GCF? LCM?

days. If she does the two activities today, how many days will she do the
two activities again on the same day?

What is asked in the problem?

What are the facts?
How will you solve the problem?
What is your answer?

What is It?

In solving word problem, follow the following steps: Understand,

Plan, Solve, Check and Look back. You can choose any of the different
methods in solving the problem: Listing, Prime factorization or
Continuous Division.

Solution to the given problem following the steps.

Understand
1. What does the problem asked The number of days Hinata will
for? do the two activities again on the
same day
What facts are given? Swim every 6 days and run every
4 days
Plan
How will you solve the problem? By finding the LCM
Solve
How is the solution done By listing
6:6, 12, 18, 24, 32
4:4, 8, 12, 16, 24
LCM is 12

10
By Prime Factorization
6: 2x3
2: 2x2
LCM is 12

By Continuous Division
2 6 4
3 3 2
2 1 2
1 1
LCM is 12

Check and Look back It would take 12 days before

What is the answer to the Hinata could do the two activities
problem? again in the same day.

Direction: Solve each of these problems following the steps. Show your
solution. You may use any of the methods you have learned in finding
the GCF or LCM.

1. I want to plant 45 Talong plants and 81 corn plants in my garden. If I

plant the same number of plants in each row and each row has only one

What I Have Learned

There are different methods in finding the GCF and LCM of two
given numbers: Listing, Prime Factorization and Continuous Division. In
solving real – life problems. To solve problems involving GCF and LCM
of two given numbers, you are to follow the steps: Understand, Plan,
Solve and Check.

If the problem requires finding the greatest number to group, split

or divide equally, share and no excess or extra then use the GCF. On
the other hand, use LCM if the problem shows hints for a cycle,
repetition, smallest number or an event to happen again.
