Hamilton Marathon Clinic

Newsletter. March 2021.

Luckily the change to level two only lasted the three days and we were able to go ahead with the
Blueberry run. It was a bit uncertain and chances of fitting in an alternative date were pretty slim
especially as it needs to be during the blueberry season for Blueberry Country. Just a reminder that the
various sponsors we have are extremely important to the club and where possible please use them and
also does no harm to mention you are from the Clinic.

Notice of AGM.
Notice is hereby given that the
2021 AGM of the Hamilton Marathon Clinic
will be held at the clubrooms on April 20 th commencing at 7.30pm.
The Agenda is:
1. Minutes of 2020 AGM.
2. Presidents Report.
3. Annual Accounts.
4. Election of Officers
5. General business.

2021 Committee
With the Covid disruptions last year, a number of long-standing committee members stayed on for an
additional year to allow continuity, and several others also committed to assist for a single year. With the
AGM approaching the majority of the committee will not be standing or if they do, not in Management
positions It is therefore important for the club going forward that everyone gives consideration to being
on the committee including the Management positions.
Socks
In a discussion with some runners and the topic of socks came up. One person said they used any
“Sports” sock including 3 for $5, another was a fan of Kathmandu socks at around $25 while several
others paid $30 to $40 for their socks.
There are many different types of socks available, material, length, price. The important thing with the
sock is it does its job. It fits, not too tight or loose, stays in place, stops blisters, dissipates heat and
moisture, and is comfortable when worn with your running shoes. My personal preference is to wear the
dearer running socks as opposed to the bulk buy “Sports” socks, but others find that they are happy with
the bulk sports socks.
Some of the cheaper socks do not appear to wick away the heat and moisture. They often also do not
last as long, and loose shape, and hole or pile
Some people use a certain type of sock and will wear these when they buy new running shoes to ensure
the shoes and socks complement each other.
I have tried various running socks during events, single layer, extra cushion, double layer, (I have just
started using some which have merino wool blended in) I am not sure if I have any preference other than
I like a low-cut sock. Most of the socks I use would cost around $25 to $35 and I like to use reasonably
new socks for events but will always wear them a few times prior to the event.

Members results
Below are some snippets of what some members have been doing.

Villa Maria Woman’s Half Marathon. There were several locals who did this and comment back from
Heather was it was a very well-run event and they had done a bit of fluid loading the night before trying
out the sponsors product.

Mount Festival of Multisport. This had 6 events in it, a half iron man 2km swim, 90km bike and half
marathon, an enduro – a bit further than the half iron, a swim/bike, and 3 run only half, ten and 5km.
Simon Popplestone who does triathlons did the enduro which was 3km swim, 120km bike and 25km run.
That’s a lot to do in one go and the day was fairly windy so made thing harder especially on the bike, so
a very creditable effort in completing this with a time of 9.15.31. Simon’s wife Cindy did the 5km round
the Mount which fitted in quite well around the endure in a time of 59.51. Keith Flockhart competed in
the half marathon, walking it in 2.42.47. There were a lot of top triathletes competing and they were
returning from the bike ride shortly after the start of the half marathon so we had them out on the course
at the same time as us, though at a much faster pace. There were good crowds and plenty of support
from them. It is an interesting event and worth entering next year if you have not done it, just for the
experience.

Tussock Traverse.

Luanda Young entered the tussock traverse 12 km walk. She said it was a thoroughly enjoyable event
which covers various distances and tracks up Ruapehu. The event started early in morning with
temperatures below zero so competitors need to be prepared and are required to carry various extras in
case of weather changes. Luanda was first overall in a time of 1.49.37. A very good effort.

2020 Taupo Off-road trail series

Keith Flockhart just received confirmation that he was the overall winner of the 3 round 2020 Run Taupo
Trail Series Mid-Course Walk category.
Park Run.

Congratulations to Hayley Robinson and Neil Crocker who just achieved milestones with their 250 th and
200th parkruns respectively.
Blueberry Run

The Blueberry run is over for an other year. As mentioned there was Level two the week prior and some
concerns on whether we could go ahead, as limiting it to 100 or groups of 100 was going to be a logistical
nightmare.

We did some people not able to attend due to them being from Auckland and not allowed in bubbles of
more than the hundred and the uncertainty possible stopped some other people from entering. We did
end up with over three hunded entries which was a reasonable number.

The day was ideal weather wise and saw a very good turn out of helpers there nice and early and the hall
and course set out in plenty of time for the rolling starts.

Pleasing to say no injuries and as far as I am aware we had everyone who started, finish the event.
(some did find it a bit of a struggle)

Feedback from how the event was run, the helpers, the blueberry pies, and the spot prizes were all
positive.

Thanks to everyone who made this event possible.
