Hamilton Marathon Clinic

Newsletter. June 2021.

Its hard to believe we are into the middle of the year already, fogs and frosts. Remember that
although you can see vehicles and bikes, it is important they see you so it is important that you
wear reflectorised gear and lights when training. I have found that often the vehicle you need to
worry about are the cars coming out of driveways and on the river trails scooters appear worse
than bikes. Possibly because you hear most bikes from their tyre noise while scooters are quiet and
some of the electric models go as fast as, if not faster than bikes.

if you do an event please drop an email with how you went and we will publish in next newsletter.
Rotorua Marathon. Lex, Dennis and Heather all competed in the Marathon. Jenny started the event to
continue her many years of competing but her ongoing issues with he injured foot meant a finish was not
to be. Luanda did the 10km walk and won that section.
Dennis followed up his Rotorua Marathon with another at Hawkes Bay. Only a two week gap.
There was club members doing the various distances at Huntly half. Sorry no details.
Michael and Hayley decided to do a trio of events on the same day starting with a Parkrun then the 6km at
the River trail event and finally Mt Maunganui We run the night.
The river trail event was part of a series of six and was a new event to encourage people to get out and
give trail walking a go. While no actual timing it was run same as any events but with a kiwi flavour, Cookie
Time Biscuits, L & P, pineapple Chunks and a BBQ. The course was along the river and through the St
Andrews Golf course and Pukete horse paddocks, Keith, Simon, Cindy, Michael and Hayley all were there
with Keith first walker home in the 12.5 event.
Luke came second in his school’s crosscountry.

Hamilton Half Marathon

It has been confirmed that Hamilton Half Marathon will have an event towards the end of year (or early
next) They intend to have a full marathon also. The event will be on the new motorway so the timing will
be dependent on the opening of this. Their website mentions that they will have more details in July.
Whether this is used as the half marathon part of our club champs will be dependent on when the date is
set.

Blueberry 2022.
A tentative date for the Blueberry next year has ben set for 14 th February. There is still things to be
finalised before we are able to confirm a date.

Subscriptions
The subscription renewals are coming in at a reasonable flow. If you have not done so, please get your
subs into the club along with the completed renewal form which was in last month’s newsletter.

Joint Remedies.
I was given high dose ante inflammatory pills and pain relief for my knee injury by the doctor. I was not
too keen to take on an ongoing basis but rather only when really necessary. I preferred to try a mix of heat
pads, liniment, and joint capsules to see if that would assist the healing. I was already using Co Enzyme
Q10 but did decide to see what else I could use. I spoke to a surgeon a few years ago on using glucosamine,
and his reply was, he could not say it would do you any good but at same time it would not do any harm.
Googling about some of these capsules, I found had reasonably reserved comments from those not selling
the products but said they could help some people in some form but not a magic pill which will suddenly
fix one’s ailments.
Liniments and Rubs. Looking at the contents of these, most have some sort of oil-based ingredients
Some have more herbs and spices than KFC. One I use, Koru Relief FX label says it has 16 natural
ingredients. Looking at a few different products labels, these are some of the ingredients noted - Almond
oil, Flaxseed oil, arnica, cayenne, capsicum, turmeric, menthol, calendula, rosemary, marjoram,
peppermint, honey, black pepper, eucalyptus, and various other types of things often used in cooking.
These rubs penetrate the skin and probably have a numbing effect. The injured part is also getting
massaged at same time.
Bone and Joint support capsules. If you go into a chemist or health shop you end up overwhelmed with
the number of different capsules available for joints and muscles. In the Chemist warehouse I had a quick
look and they all seemed to do very similar things, Joint and bone health, cartilage strengthening, muscle,
heart and bone health, supports repair of damaged and stiff joints, improves joint mobility, protects against
wear and tear, supports healthy joints and connective tissues including muscle, ligaments Supports heart
health and energy levels, to name a few. Some of the capsules that I saw were available, turmeric,
Boswellia, Co enzyme Q10, MSM, Fish oil, Omega 3, glucosamine, chondroitin, magnesium
