1.2 Overview of the RBS System

The Radio Base Station (RBS) consists of a Main Unit (MU) and one or more
RRUs. The RRUs are connected to the MU in a star configuration, as illustrated
in Figure 1 on page 3. An optical fiber cable, the Optical Interface Link (OIL),
is used to link the RRUs to the MU.

RRU11 supports single-carrier mode, whereas the RRU22 can support both
single and two-carrier modes.

Note: One MU can only support up to six cell carriers in the network.

3.1 Unpacking and Checking the Material

This section provides information for unpacking and checking the material.

2/1531-HRB 105 102/1 Uen L 2007-09-04 15

Installation Instruction, RRU

The RRU cabinet is transported in a crate.

1. Examine the packaging for damage. If it has been damaged, then make an
immediate complaint to the transport company.

2. Check that the items delivered correspond to the packing list. For more
information, see Site Installation Documentation.

3. Unpack the RRU.

Note: The weight of the RRU11 , the RRU22 21IV40 is 29 kg. The weight
of RRU22 2140, RRU22 1940 and RRU22 0840 is 27 kg. The
weight of the RRU22 is 23.9 kg.

4. Dispose of the crate in accordance with local regulations or Ericsson

recommendations.

3.2 Installing the AC Optional Equipment (RRU22 AC only)

The PSU is required to operate the RRU22 on AC. If the RRU is installed
outdoors, the ACCU is also required, otherwise the ACCU is optional.

3.2.1 Installing the PSU (Optional)

1. Fit the PSU into position on the

backside of the RRU and tighten
the screws to a torque of 2.5 Nm
using a T20 Torx screwdriver.
Note: Fasten the screws in a
diagonal sequence, for example:
1. upper left, 2. lower right, 3.

the RRU. Wrap the cable shield
around the lower part of the inner
sealing as shown in the picture.
Turn the inner sealing so that the
guide lines up with the grove,
and then insert it into the gland.
Do not tighten the gland yet.
Note: Ensure that the cable
has already been attached
to the pole, mast or wall with
clamps or straps. Two piece
sealing insert has clamping B000172F
range 12.50mm-19.00mm,
which it is suitable for cable
diameter 12.50mm-19.00mm. If
your cable diameter is between
12.50mm-19.00mm, but can’t
put cable into two pieces insert,
you have to take out one piece
inside sealing from two piece
sealing insert, then fix cable.
Note:Be very careful to ensure
that the nut does not slide down
the cable making it impossible
to reach.

3.3 Installing the RRU

This section provides instructions for mounting the RRU. It can be mounted
in two different ways:

1. Installing on a pole or a mast, see Section 3.3.1 on page 21.

2. Installing on a wall, see Section 3.3.2 on page 37.

Note: When handling the RRU, do not place the RRU upright resting on its
RF connectors.

Procedure

3.3.1 Mounting the RRU on a Pole or a Mast

Warning!

Risk for falling objects, work at height in progress. Falling objects can cause
serious injury or even be fatal. Always wear a helmet and avoid standing in
the danger area.

Note: The following precautions must be taken when working at height:

• Safety belt and safety helmet must be used

• Adequate protective clothing is essential in cold weather

• All lifting devices must be tested and approved

• A doctor’s certificate for such work must be obtained

There are two different mounting equipment for pole or mast mounting:

• Single fixture: supports one RRU and pole diameters between 60 mm

and 120 mm.

• Mounting bracket: supports one, two, or three RRU22 units and pole
diameters between 35 mm and 155 mm.

Note: When the AC option is used, the mounting bracket supports a

maximum of two RRUs.

To mount the RRU on a pole or a mast, perform the following steps:

1. Place the upper mounting fixture in the desired position on the pole.
Note: The washers and nuts for the studs indicated in the figure must
be saved for later use.

Perform the following steps if a working platform is available near the intended
position of the RRU on the pole or mast.

Note: Check if the working space on the working platform is sufficient for
working on an RRU that is laid down.

3.9.2 Connecting the RF Cables with the Monitoring Port (Optional)

To connect the RF cables between the antenna system and the RRU, perform
the following steps:

2/1531-HRB 105 102/1 Uen L 2007-09-04 67

Installation Instruction, RRU

1. Remove the protective caps from

the connectors on the Monitoring
Port and from the RF connectors
at the bottom of the RRU. Attach
the Monitoring Port to the ANT 1
connector on the RRU. Tighten RET

it to a torque of 25 Nm, using a

torque wrench fitted with a 32
mm open-ended head. 25 Nm
Note: Do not remove the
metal protective cap from the ANT2
monitoring interface on the RF
Monitoring Port. The protective ANT1
cap should only be removed
when periodical monitoring is B000395A

being performed and should be

3.12 Powering Up the RRU

This section describes how to power up the RRU.

Do!
As soon as the equipment is unpacked in an outdoor environment, the
installation procedure must be carried out and the equipment must be turned
on. The equipment must be kept powered even when it is not being used for
service.

Note: Before leaving the site the RRU must be powered up, which is essential
for its future operation.

78 2/1531-HRB 105 102/1 Uen L 2007-09-04

Procedure

Caution!

Do! Products not connected to ground risk being damaged by overvoltage or

overcurrent. Always connect products to ground according to instructions.

1. Switch on the external power to the RRU.

2. Ensure that the operation indicator of the RRU displays a green light.

Note: The green light normally appears within 5 seconds of the power
being switched on. At lower temperatures, below -20C, the
process can take up to 10 minutes.

For details on starting up the RRU and verifying the installation, see:

Verification of Installation at Site

3.13 Performing Concluding Routines

1. Clean up the site and remove objects like wrapping paper and cable pieces.

2. Dispose of waste material in accordance with local regulations.

3. Fill in the Verification Checklist in the Site Installation Documentation binder.

4. Report any faults in accordance with local requirements.

5. Hand over the Site Installation Documentation binder to the person

responsible for the site.

6. Lock all doors and gates to the site.

Environment

Ericsson strongly advises that when cleaning up after installing the RBS,
the personnel performing the installation must pay particular attention to the
environment. Primarily, recycle all waste materials that can be recycled and
sort waste so that it can be disposed of according to local regulations.
