fantastic panel of judges AND we're
running a fundraising campaign for a very
good cause that's close to everyone's heart.

about the fundraiser
Score Relief 2021 is raising money to
support workers from the events and
entertainment industries, including live
performance, theatre, film and TV, who
have experienced financial and other
hardships due to the Coronavirus
pandemic.
Monies will be used to provide relief to
workers in the technical supply chain who
have lost work or income due to the
pandemic, with a particular focus on those
workers, and their families, who have not
received support from the government.

100% of profits from our campaign will be

donated to the Backup Hardship Fund.
Backup is the Technical Entertainment
Charity and is registered with the UK
Charity Commission (No. 1159168)

our Goal
With your support, we aim to raise at least
$5000 (USD) in donations during the
month that the contest will be running. We
need your help! Even if you can't donate,
please share our campaign as widely as
you can on facebook, instagram, twitter,
YouTube and any other media.

ANY donation is very much appreciated. If

it's difficult to decide how much, then
perhaps think about what you'd typically
earn in an hour, or a day, and give the
amount corresponding to your time in this
way...that's one possible guideline you
could use.

 Judging criteria
GUIDELINES FOR CREATING YOUR
MUSIC AND HOW IT WILL BE JUDGED
Entries to the competition
will be judged according to
the following criteria:
Technical execution – Is the
piece well executed from a
technical standpoint?
Recording quality, mixing,
levels, quality control etc.
Creativity and originality –
Is the piece inspired, unique
and interesting? Is there a
sense of the creator's 'stamp'
on the music?
Storytelling - Does it draw
you in to the scene? How
well does it enhance or
support the scene without
distracting? Does it heighten
viewers' emotions
corresponding to the action?
Do changes in tempo,
intensity and the
arrangement make sense
with reference to the on-
screen action? Does it
support the sound design?

Because the main prize will
be a performance of the
score by an orchestra, please
bear the following in mind:
THE ORCHESTRA
The 27-piece chamber
orchestra consists of:
4 1st violin, 4 2nd violin, 4
viola, 3 cello, 1 double bass1
flute, 1 clarinet, 1 oboe, 1
bassoon2 horns, 1 trumpet, 1
trombone1 percussion, 1
piano, 1 harp
So the winning score will be
judged according to the
criteria on the left PLUS we
will consider how it would
translate to being performed
by the orchestra. This does
not mean that you have to
use the WHOLE orchestra. It
also doesn't mean that you
have to use orchestra sounds.
You could use electronic
sounds, beats, ambient pads,
choral elements...whatever
you feel inspired to use!

WRITING FOR
ORCHESTRA
A LITTLE GUIDANCE FROM JACK

ORCHESTRA TO HELP YOU IF YOU WANT
TO WRITE FOR THE ORCHESTRA AND
YOU'RE NOT SURE HOW.
If you have limited
experience writing for an
ensemble like this don't be
intimidated , simply treat
each instrument as its own
voice within your musical
creation.
Remember, certain
instruments have certain
characteristics such as the
flute can only play one note
at a time, and the player
must stop to breathe. We
strongly recommend doing
some basic research on the
instruments used in this
competition so that you are
aware of what they can and
can't do.
Entries will not be judged on
orchestration or
arrangement, so we are only
interested in the strength of
your creative ideas.
Your job is to write the best
music you can and it’s our
job to make this into a
readable version for the
orchestra when the winning
entry is recorded. We want
to be as inclusive as we can.
Remember that you can still
take part and be considered
for all the prizes without
necessarily planning for the
orchestra. But you will have
more chance of winning the
first prize if you do :)

examples and pieces of
advice from great composers
and orchestrators online,
especially on YouTube and
we will share some of these
during the contest.
