Hello everyone!, welcome to “Now In Orbit: The LSCSE
Orientation!” My name is Areej Arshad and I am Director of
Events & Management. I will be guiding you through the
evening so that you get to know what LSCSE is all about,
what we have planned, and how you can get involved!

Before we begin, please rename yourselves to include your

roll numbers in your Zoom name as those will be important
for us in handing out giveaways throughout the evening.

Firstly, we have Dr. Muhammad Zaheer who is currently an join)
assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and
Chemical Engineering at SSE.His research focusses on
renewable energy generation/storage and green chemistry. Dr.
Zaheer’s work has been widely published in leading scientific
journals, “Chemical Society Reviews', and “Chemistry of
Materials” are some of the prominent ones.

Dr. Shahana Khurshid received her B.S in Environmental
Engineering from MIT, graduating in the top 5% of her class.
She did her Masters and PhD from UT Austin and has led
over 25 research projects in universities, companies, and
federal labs on air quality, exposure to pollutants,
environmental conservation, polymers, and biomedical
assays.

Abdullah Dr. Qasim Imtiaz is also an assistant professor in the

research revolves around the synthesis and characterization of
functional materials for sustainable energy production and

First up, we have Events and Management, the bright minds
behind our extravagant and fun-filled events!
Mariam Events and Management: Hello Everyone and Aoa, my
Arif name is Mariam and I am the director for Events and
Management at LSCSE. My team consists of my co-director
Areej Arshad who you have met already and our ADs Mahgul
and Eesha. Together we bring life to the society by planning
and executing all the events held here. From coming up with
creative ideas for the events to designing and organizing is
what our department does. We conduct departmental
workshops and bring together all the departments for all these
amazing events that you will know about in a while. So if you
 are creative and want to have a key position in organizing all
the exciting stuff that happens at LSCSE, this department is
for you!
Areej Thank you Mariam, next let’s meet team External Relations.
Our representatives to the outside world, who work to ensure
the LSCSE name is reaching new heights!
Mahnoor External Relations: The ER department-as our General
Zaheer Secretary says- is the Brains of the society. We give all the
creative and fun ideas to the society for different schedules
and work on maximizing the society's outreach to different
institutes even outside of LUMS. We also reach out to
companies and celebrities for promotions and sponsorships
(so yeah we got the connections! :) Apart from this, we run
the the Student Run Lab at SEE on which the whole society is
currently working. So if you are somebody who has a lot of
fun and executable ideas and you want to build connections
with different organizations, then this department is definitely
for you! / If you want to have an eagle's eye view on all that is
going on in the society then this is the department for you!!!
Areej Thank you, Mahnoor! Next up we have Team HR. These are
the individuals who work tirelessly to ensure all of our events
and meetings are executed to perfection. They are the
backbone of our society!
Tehreem Human Resources: The HR department is the heart of the
Fatima society and the Mom for all members! Everything, from
coordinating with every member to ensuring each department
works harmoniously, comes under our domain. We are the
ones ensuring you have tasty food by your side while the EC
throws work on you during meetings. From arranging GBM's,
Icebreaking sessions, Society trips, and all the fun-filled
activities, we tend to focus on friendships and create a homely
environment for everyone in society.

Publications. They’re the team who bring us the most
interesting scientific knowledge and facts!

Arif Publications: The publication department serves the most

Hussain critical part of society as the famous journalist Malcolm
Muggeridge said, “Publication is a paper conscience”. Here at
Lums Society of Chemical Science and Engineering
(LSCSE), we do not only write or publish writings about
chemistry or chemical engineering, but we also seek to write
about different exciting and extraordinary science facts and
information consisting of both past and present research.
Moreover, we collect all researched data from various
departments of SSE and organize them for future references
and works. It has been$ almost four years since the formation
of the LSCSE. The publication department envisions
spreading awareness among the community about recent
developments in science and significant environmental
challenges. The primary focus of LSCSE’s publication
department is to organize all those research and findings that
had/has been published in the diverse scientific fields. So, if
you are the one who seeks to know how to post good quality
writing or have an interest in reading research papers, then
this department is for you. We, the publication department of
LSCSE, want to say one last wonderful anonymous quote to
all seekers of scientific publications, “There are friends, there
is family, and there are friends that become family”.
 Areej And next up is Finance and Marketing, The department that
makes sure there’s always enough cash flowing in for our
ambitious ideas!
Abdullah Finance and Marketing: Aoa, I am Abdullah Azam,
Azam Director Finance and marketing dept. My assistant directors
are..... Tasks of our dept are: 1/.... maintenance of day_to_day
accounts of expenditures and procurement of indent copies.
2/.....maintain lists of Potential Sponsors and drafting
Memorandum of understanding MOU, with the guidance of
Treasurer and approval of the President, in case of
partnership. 3/.... making of written proposals and requests for
society transactions before the Treasurer. 4/..... aiding 'Event
convening comittee' with their Finances and budgeting. So,
dear fellow students, our Dept. makes plans, procures and
manages all the Finances for those plans, through our
'Potential Collaborators', ( we don't call them sponsors, as this
new term makes them forget they r helping us monetarily).
I'll end up with a qoute, "Good marketing makes company
look smart,(like LUMS) Great marketing makes customers
feel smart (like our financial Collaborators)".

Mahnoor Media and Promotions: The media and promotions
Khan department offers an accessible introduction to LSCSE,
forming a connection between our audience and team. By
means of engaging posters and fun activities we strive to
interact with our audience at a deeper level. Being the sole
means through which audience can interact with LSCSE, it is
our responsibility to educate our audience about goals and
ambitions as a science society. If you want to be a part of a
department where you will get to learn how to form a
presence on social media and learn the use of software’s like
photoshop, illustrator etc. Then LSCSE’s media and
promotions department is the place for you! We will be here
to guide and help you along the way.

First, past events: The 2nd International Conference on
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology was held last year to
highlight the advancements made in nanomaterials research
and their applications. Researchers from all over the world
flew to Lahore and participated in this mega event hosted at
LUMS. It was a collaboration between LUMS, NUST,
Preston University, and yours truly: LSCSE. It was an

min The Stars: A Cultural Networking Night" for all of the event’s
participants, guests, and the entire LUMS community. The
social night, as many of you would remember, was the most
extravagant event of 2019 during which the foreign
participants of ICONN and the LUMS student body were able
to enjoy a night filled with amazing local food, cultural
music, neat handicrafts, and lively dance performances. We
gave them an exquisite rundown of what Pakistan (and
Lahore) is all about, all in a single space at LUMS
Carbon is LSCSE’s flagship event which brings together high
school students interested in the sciences to partake in a
chemistry, chemical engineering, and material sciences based

min mentally challenging and interesting scientific activities for
teenagers across the country. It’s held at LUMS, but this
winter, it’ll be going online. The mode may change, but the
fun won’t stop!

Synergize is another one of our flagship events open to
undergrads and grad students, perhaps the one with the most
impact and reach. It is a platform upon which bright minds
can compete to present a unique and feasible “million dollar”
solution to a common world problem. Each year, we will have
a set theme decided upon with input from the faculty at SSE
2 Esha and our corporate sponsor. Potential themes include:
mins Pakistan’s energy crisis, inaccessibility to clean drinking
water, inaccessibility to basic first aid and medicine, global
warming and weather changes, maintaining export crop
standards, and more. A relevant industrial partner will
sponsor the event with the promise to take forward the
winning idea and implement it through their company. A
panel of judges including expert professors, industry leaders,
and company representatives will decide the winners.
1 min Esha Zero waste week is one of the upcoming flagship events of
LSCSE which will display our society's vision and mission in
its truest form. It will be a weeklong event dedicated to
reducing our carbon footprint and living life in the most
environment friendly and environmentally aware way. The
week is filled with industrial experts panels on industrial
waste management, the scope of renewable energy in
Pakistan, imminent environmental concerns, tree plantation
drives, and spreading awareness to local schools as well as
the greater community
