1. important solids
a. prisms
b. pyramids, cylinders, spheres, and
cones
2. similar solids
a. volumes of similar solids
3. practice questions
topic one:
important solids
prisms
the 2 shaded faces of the prism
are bases

altitude of a prism: a segment

joining the 2 base planes and
perpendicular to both

the length of an altitude is the

height of the prism

lateral faces: faces of a prism that are not its bases

lateral edges: adjacent lateral faces interest in parallel

segments
prisms
the lateral faces of a prism are parallelograms
- if they are rectangles the prism is a right prism
- if they are not, the prism is an oblique prism

lateral edge is
lateral edges are altitudes NOT an altitude
right prisms: v = bh

2
pyramid: v = ⅓ bh cylinder: v = π r h

2 3
cone: v = ⅓ πr h sphere: v = 4/3 πr
examples
ex. 1: find the volume of a rectangle with width of 6,
length of 3 and height of 12

solution: V = Bh

Solution: V = (6)(3)(12)

Solution: V = 216 cubic units

ex. 2: find the volume of a regular hexagon that has

base edges 6 and height 12

solution:

base area = 6(½ · 6 · 3√3) = 54√3

then, V = ⅓ Bh = ⅓ · 54√3 · 12 = 216√3

examples
ex. 3: find the volume of a cylinder with a height of 9
ft and radius of 3 ft.

solution: V = π r2h

solution: V = π (3)2 (9)

solution: V = 81 π ft3

ex. 4: find the volume of a cone with a height of 12 m

and radius of 6 m.

solution: V = ⅓ πr2h

solution: V = ⅓ π (6)2 (12)

solution: V = 144 π m3
examples
ex. 5: find the volume using the diagram

solution: v = 4/3 πr3

solution: V = 4/3 π (12/2)3

solution: V = 4/3 π (6)3

3
solution: V = 288 π mi

topic two:
similar solids
scale factor of
similar solids
if the scale factor of 2 similar solids is a : b, then

1. the ratio of corresponding perimeters is a:b

2. the ratio of the base areas, of the lateral

areas, and of the total areas is a2 b2

3. the ratio of the volumes is a3 b3

example!
for the similar solids shown, find
the ratios of the:
a. base perimeters
b. lateral areas
6 10
c. volumes

solution: the scale factor is 6 : 10, or 3 : 5

a. ratio of base perimeters = 3 : 5
b. ratio of lateral areas = 32 : 52 = 9 : 25
c. ratio of volumes = 33 : 53 = 27 : 125
