 Determine Prism, surface areas and volumes of

a prisms; and
 Solve community related problems involving
surface areas and volumes of a prisms
PRE-TEST RECITATION
1. BASE
Name it!
Instructions:
Call from the class about 3
participants, then let them guess
3. LATERAL FACE what is the whole word/s in each
number.

2. HEIGHT

1. BASE
Note that, the 3 chosen participants will receive 3 points that will goes
to their respective groups during the groupings at the end of the
discussion.
WHAT IS PRISM?
 A prism is a 3-dimensional shape with two identical shapes facing each other.
These identical shapes are called “bases”.
 The bases can be a triangle, square, rectangle or any other polygon.
SURFACE AREA; LATERAL
SURFACE AREA
The Lateral Surface Area of a
prism is the sum of the sum of
the areas of its lateral faces.
SURFACE AREA; LATERAL
SURFACE AREA
 Lateral Surface Area
FORMULA: L = P × h
Where;
L - Lateral Surface Area
P - Base Perimeter
h - Height
SURFACE AREA; LATERAL
SURFACE AREA
 EXAMPLE
Find the lateral surface area of the prism given if the perimeter of the base is 100
inches, and the height of the prism is 55 inches.

Given: Solution:
P = 100 inches L= P x h
h = 55 inches L = 100 x 55
L = 5,500 squared inches

*Therefore, the Lateral Surface Area of a Prism is 5,500 squared inches.

SURFACE AREA; TOTAL
SURFACE AREA
 The Total Surface Area of a
prism is the sum of the areas of
its lateral faces and its two
bases.
SURFACE AREA; TOTAL
SURFACE AREA
 FORMULA: T = L + 2B
Where;
T - Total Surface Area
L - Lateral Surface Area
B - Area of the Base
SURFACE AREA; TOTAL
SURFACE AREA
 EXAMPLE
Find the total surface area of an isosceles trapezoidal prism with parallel edges
of the base 6 cm and 12 cm, the legs of the base 5 cm each, the altitude of the
base 4 cm and height of the prism 10 cm.
 EXAMPLE
Find the total surface area of an isosceles trapezoidal prism with parallel edges of the base 6
cm and 12 cm, the legs of the base 5 cm each, the altitude of the base 4 cm and height of the
prism 10 cm.
SOLUTION:
*the base perimeter is the sum of the lengths of the sides.
P= 6 + 5 +12 + 5 = 28 cm
*since the base is an isosceles trapezoid, its area is + ).
B = (4) (6 + 12) = 36

T = Ph + 2B
= 28 (10) + 2 (36)
= 280 + 72
= 352
GENERAL FORMULA; SURFACE
AREA OF PRISM
Surface Area of Prism = (2 × B) + (P × h)

Where;
B = Area of the Base
P = Base Perimeter
h = Height
GENERAL FORMULA; SURFACE
AREA OF PRISM
Example:
Find the surface area of a prism given above whose base area is 12 square units,
the base perimeter is 18 units and the height of the prism is 6 units.
Surface Area of Prism (SAP) formula = (2 × B) + (P × h)
Given: Solution:
Ab = 12 SAP = (2 x Ab) + (B x h)
B = 18 units = (2 x 12) + (18 x 6)
H = 6 units = 132
*The surface rea of prism is 132 square units.
VOLUME OF A PRISM
 The volume of a prism is defined as
the amount of space a prism occupies.
 The unit of volume of a prism is given
as cubic meters, cubic centimeter,
cubic inches or cubic feet, etc. of
space a prism occupies.
VOLUME OF A PRISM
 FORMULA: V = B × H

Where:

V – Volume of a Prism
B – Base Area
H – Height of the Prism
VOLUME OF A PRISM
EXAMPLE
Find the volume of a prism whose base area is 3 square inches and height is 7 inches.

Given: Solution:
B=3 V=BxH
 H = 7 inches V = 3 7 inches
V = 21
* therefore, the volume of the prism is 21 cubic inches

Note: The volume of any prism depends on the shape of its base. With the change in
the shape of the base, the area of the base changes as well.
CYLINDER AND
CONE
Its areas and volumes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The students will be able to:
 Explain the properties of a cylinder and cone.
 Measure and determine the surface area of a
cylinder and cone.
 Measure and determine the volume of a cylinder
and cone.
CYLINDER
We can picture the
cylinder by looking in
 A cylinder is a three- a soda can.
dimensional solid figure
which has two identical
circular bases joined by a
curved surface at a
particular distance from
the center which is the
height of the cylinder.
CYLINDER
The bases are like circular disks. The line
passing from the center or joining the centers of
two circular bases is called the axis of the
cylinder shape.
The distance between the two bases is
called perpendicular distance and is
represented as height, “h”.
The two circular bases have a distance from the
center to the outer boundary which is known as
the radius of the cylinder, represented by “r”.
The cylinder is a combination of 2 circles + 1
rectangle.
