GENERATOR PREPARATION

Prior to taking an exposure, verify the following generator preparations are complete:
• RECEPTOR (TABLE, WALL, or NONE) selected (refer to Section 5).
• MODE (MANUAL, AEC, AUTO-TECH, or AUTO-TECH with AEC) selected.
• Techniques and Exposure Factors (mA, kVp, Time, and mAs) verified.
6-1 Introduction
The Silhouette HF generator operates in four modes:
• MANUAL MODE - Requires manual calculation/selection of all x-ray techniques
and exposure factors.
• AEC MODE - Automatic Exposure Control (optional) uses an ion chamber to ensure
proper exposure times. AEC fields are selectable as independent field selections on
the Operator Control Panel. Film density and film/screen combinations are adjustable
by editing the AEC Mode display screen.
• AUTO-TECH MODE - The system automatically selects all techniques and exposure
factors from pre-programmed parameters after a patient thickness measurement is
entered. Pre-programmed Auto-Tech settings can be modified at any time through the
Operator Control Panel, either in the actual stored program or for the current exam.
• AUTO-TECH WITH AEC MODE - In addition to the automatic technique and
exposure factor selections of the AUTO-TECH Mode, this mode also selects
pre-programmed AEC chamber and AEC Field Format parameters.

SECTION 8
AUXILIARY GENERATOR OPERATIONS

8-1 Heat Unit Computer

Anode heat units are computed and displayed continuously onscreen, thereby monitoring
the dissipation of heat between exposures. (The amount of tube anode heating, expressed
in thousands of heat units, is the KHU value.) Built-in tube protection alerts the operator
prior to a subsequent exposure until sufficient heat has dissipated from the tube to allow
the next exposure without exceeding tube limits.
AVOID EQUIPMENT DAMAGE!
NOTICE
Damage to the generator or X-Ray Tube could occur if exposures are
initiated immediately after turning system power OFF and ON. The
generator Heat Unit computer is automatically reset each time system
power is disconnected and will allow an exposure regardless of actual tube
anode heat dissipation. Avoid equipment damage by waiting at least 6
minutes before initiating exposures after a system power loss and
subsequent power reset (30 minutes for systems performing frequent
examinations per day).
8-2 Printer (Optional)
8-2-1 Internal Printer
The built-in printer, an optional system feature, automatically prints technique factors,
the anatomical view, patient I.D., facility name, date and time, upon completion of each
exposure. Peel-off labels can be placed on film or patient records, providing
documentation for quality assurance. Plain paper could alternately be used if only an
exposure log is needed.
A typical label is shown below.

9-3 TOMO REMOVAL AND STORAGE PROCEDURE
The following steps describe how to remove the Tomography system ty-bar and fulcrum
tower when non-tomographic use of the x-ray system is desired.
1. On the Tomographic Console, press SETUP button. When ty-bar stops (vertical
position), press STOP button on console.
2. Loosen two (2) knurled knobs at each end of ty-bar and remove ty-bar.

Note: Once ty-bar is removed, do not press TOMO ON button on Tomographic Console. This
will release lock on bucky, causing it and the slide tube to move freely.

3. Disengage bucky engagement pin (do not pull pin out completely).
4. Disconnect tomo tower cable (E15183) from connector at base of fulcrum tower.
Attach tomo tower cable connector to cable storage connector located on fulcrum
tower support plate.
5. Loosen knurled knob on the bottom center of the fulcrum tower and lift tower off
support plate. Store tower and ty-bar in safe location. Do not drop tower.
6. Move the angulation Detent Lever (located on the tubestand transverse boom) to the
DETENT position (refer to Illustration 4-24).

CHAPTER 8 – SYSTEM FAULTS

SECTION 1
INTRODUCTION

Refer to this section for assistance in locating and correcting minor system faults, should
they occur.
The majority of these faults can be corrected without a service technician. Refer to the
Silhouette HF Service Manual for system faults that require the attention of a service
representative.

SECTION 2
GENERATOR ERROR MESSAGES

When the system will not initiate an exposure, an audible alert will sound twice and one
or more “error messages” will appear on the Operator Control Panel display.
Refer to the following descriptions for assistance in interpreting the error message:
TABLE 8-1
GENERATOR ERROR MESSAGES

Message Description

BUCKY? Bucky selected but did not return "ready" signal to start exposure.
CALIB? Calibration data in the EE Prom is not correct
DOOR? Room entrance door is open.
FAULT? Problem with AEC.
FIELD? Attempted exposure with AEC mode enabled without Ion chamber field selected.
FILAM? Problem with the filament control circuit voltage.
HYFOB? (Hold Your Finger On Button) Exposure terminated prematurely because the EXPOSE key was
released before the exposure was completed.
KVP? Problem with the anode kVp circuit or anode high voltage transformer.
KVP-C? Problem with the cathode circuit or cathode high voltage transformer.
LINE? Input line is out of range. Check the input bus bar.
MAS? "0" mAs selected - no exposure can be initiated. Check mAs selection.

GENERATOR ERROR MESSAGES

Message Description

MASTR? Problem with the master EE Prom being copied from or to.
NO MA? Attempted exposure - no tube current during exposure time.
PAPER? Internal printer out of paper.
PBL? Positive beam limitation circuit is open; check collimator (automatic collimators only).
PHASE? One of the three input phases is missing; check input power.
PRNTR? Communication problem between the control and the printer.
RELAY? Problem with the back up contactor.
RETRY? EE Prom programmed did not correctly save data. Try again or replace EE Prom being copied
to.
ROTOR? Tube rotor is too hot or not getting correct current to start. Check rotor circuit.
S.E.S.? Stored Energy Source voltage is low; leave unit on to restore voltage.

Ready Lamp lights steadily when the batteries are charged, indicating the system is ready to
take an exposure.

If the Ready light is off, the batteries are not charged. The Operator Control Panel displays the
S.E.S. error when PREP key is pressed.
TIMER? Timer circuit Problem. Call for service.
TUBE Maximum tube load capacity exceeded. Reduce technique factors.

System circuit breaker on Verify:

and LCD display is dark. – Power line is plugged into the receptacle or connected to the main circuit
breaker?
– Power is available at the receptacle or the main circuit breaker?
– The remote ON/OFF switch on the Operator Control Panel is in the ON position?
– The Auto Shut Off feature activated?
If the system is left unattended for sixty minutes or more, the system activates the
Automatic Shut Off feature.
Reset the system by: turning OFF the Remote Power Switch (Operator Control
Panel), waiting 5 seconds, and turning ON Remote Power Switch.
No exposure. Are any error messages displayed?
Printer does not print, or Verify:
does not print properly. – Power on?
– Paper or labels in the printer?
– Ribbon cartridge is properly installed?
– Printer connected to the system at the microprocessor board?
– Cable attached to the printer?

Run printer diagnostic test.

Image quality. – Motion artifacts?
Relax the patient. Make the patient as comfortable as possible. Check once again
for proper positioning.
– Insufficient contrast? Decrease kVp.
Check the dark room, film expiration date, chemicals and developer temperature.
Fault Reset (AEC). Verify:
– Proper chamber selected?
– Chamber connected?
– Film speed correct?

If the film is too dark, decrease density.

If the film is too light, increase density.

SECTION 4
RESETTING FAULTS

When AEC mode is enabled, exposure time/termination is controlled via ionization

chamber sensing circuits. In addition, a back-up time is programmed into the system to
help prevent excessive patient dose in the event of an AEC system malfunction. If the
exposure time equals the back-up time, exposure will be terminated and a fault message
will appear across the bottom of the screen. To clear the fault, press the function key by
the flashing FAULT RESET field. If the fault persists, the system should be used in
manual mode until the fault can be isolated/corrected.
