Hospital Recovery Times
A large metropolitan hospital is trying to reduce the average patient recovery and discharge time in its hospital. Da
data systems integrator, has developed a system that is designed to reduce the recovery and discharge time by a
minutes or more. But the system costs over 5 million dollars to fully implement the system. The hospital IT director
skeptical about the effectiveness of the system.
Datronics agreed to a trial of their system over a period of 2 months. The IT director collected data from a random
3500 patients over this period, as given in the dataset. There are three PACUs (Post-Anaesthesia Care Units). O
in-patient (e.g., more invasive surgery) and two are out-patient (e.g., less invasive surgery) although there may be
mixing. Each PACU is a large recovery area for patients, right after their surgery.
Before the trial implementation, it was known that historically, the average (mean) patient recovery and discharge
the hospital was 80 minutes. (Hint: Datronics asserts that its system can reduce this time by at least 15 minutes
new mean should be lower).
