Keeping Learning the Main Thing at WBS

iSMART Goal

iSMART Goal: I am teaching my students to use self-assessment

to reflect on their learning in writing, using the learning pit.

- Why: because we are not reflecting on our learning

- Why: time has not been prioritised into my planning for
reflecting
- How: give time for students to reflect on their learning
- How: teach the learning pit and co-construct a template for
reflection
Meeting the goal

- I will start by doing a focused lesson on the learning pit and

introduce the vocabulary/language.
- We will use a modelling book to reflect on deep learning - I
will scaffold/model this to the class for the first time.
- We will co-construct a template for active reflection on
learning, using the learning pit and relevant vocab.
- I will print out and laminate a class template and the
students will begin doing this in their reflection journals.
Learning Pit Lesson

- We started by discussing our prior

knowledge and how it related to
our display ‘dive into learning’.
- We had pictures of people during
the learning process, and decided
where we thought they belonged
along the learning pit.
- We reflected on our learning, and
wrote down our thoughts and
feelings we experience on a post-it
note, and then placed them in the
correct place along the pit.
Modelling & co-constructing
Lesson
- We brainstormed what we
could include in a weekly
reflection of learning.
- We co-constructed this into
a template.
- We then did a weekly
reflection together, using
everyone’s reflections.
Reflecting in Journals

- Reflecting in our learning journals is

something that Room 7 have
started doing on a Friday afternoon.
- We use the template that we
co-constructed which includes our
progress on our individual goals
and where we have moved in the
learning pit.
Reading reflections

High expectations teaching:

- Set individual goals with students rather
than whole group - goals board? Will
help them reflect on their learning and
decide their next steps.
- Flexible grouping (opt-in workshops).

Know thy impact:

- Listen to the students more, on what
they do and don’t understand.
