Building Relationships – e.g. daily greetings/farewells, developing trust, special time, listening,
changing negative reputations, building positive parent relationships.

You have a very relaxed way with your class and they clearly like learning with you. We just missed some
Maths games which the students were enjoying together on the mat as we came in.

You inject lots of fun into your classroom routines - chanting Maths as a group, using Waterfall and the
hand gesture as a way of getting attention, easy peasy lemon squeezy, macaroni cheese ...

You have a positive, engaging classroom environment - we noticed posters about each student, booklets
in Te Reo Maori and displays of student artwork. This helps to demonstrate shared ownership of the
classroom and that student voice has a prominent part to play in your room. We also loved the learning
prompts such as the writing process visual.

Proactive Teacher Strategies – e.g. rules, routines, visual schedules, non-verbal prompts/signals,
transitions, clear commands, reminders, classroom arrangement, re-directing, work is at child’s
level.

The visual timetable is very clear and easy to follow with the ticks after each activity is completed. This
will give students security about what is happening next.

Literacy/numeracy groups are very clearly identified and displayed on the whiteboard. The tumble visuals
are also prominently displayed.

You clearly have well established and practised routines that your learners can follow e.g. they responded
promptly to the expectations about independent learning and got on with things efficiently.

You set up the transition well, explaining the task and modelling it, then checking for understanding before
sending them off to work independently.

We liked the way you gave students the option of working with you on the mat if they needed more
support - it was interesting to note how many boys chose to stay with you on the mat.

You checked in regularly during the independent work showing each learner that you valued them equally
but stopping to assist individuals as required. They would have appreciated that 1:1 time.

Behaviour Plan Review (Compulsory area for review)

Your target student was absent but thanks for sharing your behaviour plan. We did notice the gentle way
you redirected a couple of students during mat time. You did this in such a way that the negative
behaviour was not focused on and the relationship with the student could be maintained.

Considerations:

Food for thought:

The independent task you wanted the learners to do was quite complex and you were clearly aware of
that. There appeared to be a lot of unpacking of instructions during mat time therefore and some students
may have struggled to stay focused for so long. We wondered whether some of the activity like the date
and the title etc., which your students would be more familiar with, needed to be gone over in as much
detail. We liked the way you offered so much scaffolding however and the number of students on the mat

together with those who just got on with it illustrated the degree of differentiation required.

Summary Feedback:

Jodel, thanks for allowing us to sit in your room today. It was great to be able to see mat time, a transition,
and some independent work all in half an hour or less. You have a lovely class and they were settled and
engaged during the independent activity, even in the afternoon, which shows how well they understand
your expectations about learning. Ka pai!
