Goals & Reflections

Progress updates & comments

Reading 05/05/2021:
Programme - - Meeting with Halina - we decided on a goal for
This term I will this term. Looked at doing 2 goals, one focusing
investigate on guided reading and one on the task board. I
strategies and will focus on the task board first and then think
processes to about guided reading once this is set up and
ensure all ready in the classroom. The purpose of wanting
needs are
catered for in
to look at my task board is because mixed
an effective ability is not working. I want activities that suit
reading the needs of my learners - I have some lower
programme ability students who need more hands-on
activities to support fine motor skills.
- After the meeting I walked over to the
kiwi/kowhai classrooms (year 0-1) and looked at
what their reading programmes looked like. I
had a look through some modelling books and
realised the importance of group activities to
suit their levels.

06/05/2021:
- I continued to look at other’s task boards for
inspiration. I decided to make a digital task
board so that I can have specific activities for
each group. This also means that teacher time
is on the task board so they know when they are
seeing me.
- Before (wheel). Students' names were in pairs on
the wheel and every 10-15 minutes it would
rotate. This was not working for focussed
activities.
- After: the students have activities in their
groups, this is displayed digitally on the TV.
10/05/2021:
- First day testing out the new task board! It went
well, the students found it easy to read and said
they preferred it to the wheel because it was
bright and easy to see. They could find the
activities easily from the drawers which have
matching labels so I am really pleased with how
it went. Just need to work on voice level!

20/05/2021:
- Halina and I presented a workshop around the
reading tumble. Link to presentation here. This
was part of the MEMO workshops where staff
can opt in to workshops to support their
literacy programmes. The discussions that we
had as a group were rich as we discussed the
activities, resources, and benefits to the
students.

Overall Goal Reflection:

I feel like my goal has definitely been achieved and I have learnt a
lot throughout the process. My original reading wheel was not
catered to the student’s needs because it was very generic for all
students in my class to use. I completely changed my reading
programme to meet the needs of all students, and I now have a
wide range of resources and activities for the students to do. I now
know that my students are really benefiting from the reading
programme because they are doing rich activities which target
their reading skills.
