a. The most recent eruption of Mayon volcano was January 23, 2018.
b. Mayon volcano is active stratovolcano located in Legazpi, Albay in
Bicol Region, on the large island of Luzon in the Philippines.
- One of the Philippines' biggest attractions is Mt. Mayon, the perfectly
cone-shaped wonder of a volcano in Bicol.
- The volcano is referred to in those parts as “Bulkang Magayon”
which literally translates to “beautiful volcano”. They say that the
name of Mayon comes from an ancient regional folktale about a
princess named Daragang Magayon.
- The best example of saying that looks may be deceiving might be
Mt. Mayon. The volcano has had its fair share of deadly eruptions
throughout history, as Mayon is also renowned for its beauty. In the
past half millennium, it has erupted 52 times, dating back to the
first recorded one way back in 1616.
- The most tragic defeat in the explosive past of Mayon will have to
be the church of Cagsawa. Residents of the city of Cagsawa were
forced to evacuate during the massive eruption of 1814. The local
church priest ordered the bells to toll to alert the townspeople of the
imminent catastrophe. However, hundreds were forced to take
shelter behind the locked doors of the convent because of the
sudden existence of the explosion. It proved to be too much with
the lava stream and subsequent ash and swallowed the church
where it stood.
The place persists today as one of Mayon's most picturesque
perspectives. To this day the blackened remains of the church
tower remain erect, acting as a reminder of the beauty and calamity
surrounding it.
c. The eruption type of Mayon volcano was classified as Strombolian
eruption
d. In 1814, Mayon's most destructive eruption killed over 1200 people
and destroyed many cities. The volcano rises 2462 m above the Gulf of
Albay and has very steep upper slopes capped by a small summit
crater, measuring 35-40 degrees. The cost of crop damage is now at
P185,281,979. This is up from last January 26's P94 million.
e. Civil aviation authorities were directed to advise pilots against flying
due to ash near the volcano's summit. In the affected areas, schools
have been suspended. In addition, the weather office of the Philippines
expects occasional heavy rain in the Bicol region in a few days,
potentially triggering mud flows or lahar. Precautionary evacuations
were carried out in villages (barangays) as a result of the increased
alert level, with thousands of families displaced and staying in
evacuation centers. As evacuations are still under way, the final
number of displaced families is still unknown.
