MOUNT MAYON

 Mayon also known as Mount Mayon is an active stratovolcano with a


small central summit crater. it is one of the world’s most symmetrical
volcanic cones. The perfect shape of this volcano is due to the balance
between erosion and eruption, defined by the angle or repose of ash.

 Mayon volcano is a beautifully symmetrical volcano with a


steep upper slope of 35-40º and is capped by small summit
crater 200 m in diameter.
 The volcanic crater is about 250 m in diameter. Atleast 85
lava flows have been identified ,and consist mainly of lava
augite-hypersthene-andesite, generally fed from the crater.
 Mount mayon may vary greatly in volume 10 and 500 km³,
with surrounding Ring plains containing up to 80% of the
erupted volume of long-lived examples.

• The volcano with it’s surrounding landscape was declared a national park on July 20,
1938, the first in the nation. It was reclassified as a “natural park in 2000. It is the
centerpiece of the Albay Biosphere reserve, declared by UNESCO in 2016 and is
currently being nominated as a world heritage site.

an area of 5,775.7 hectares(14,272 acres)
located in the eight cities and
municipalities that has jurisdiction of the
mountain. These communities are Camalig,
Daraga, Guinabotan, Legazpi City, Tabaco
City, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo, all in
the province of Albay.

FIRST,MOST FAMOUS,MOST RECENT ERUPTION

 Mayon is the most active volcano in he Philippines, erupting over 52 times in


the past 500 years. Historical observations accounted its first eruption in
1616.

 It’s most destructive eruption was 1814, when the town of Cagsawa was
buried and approximately 1,200 people were killed.

 The last eruption of Mount Mayon was on 2018.

 PHIVOLCS reported that the eruption at
mayon continued during 30 August-5
September, with slow lava effusion from
the summit crater feeding flows on the
S,SE, and E flanks. The lengths of lava
flow in the Mi-Ilsi(S), Bonga (SE), and
Basud (E) drainages remained at 2.8 km,
3.4 km, and 1.1 km, respectively.

MOUNT MAYON
Popular with climbers and campers, the volcano is the

centre of mayon volcano national park (21 square

miles( 55 square kml). There are large abaca

plantation on its lower slopes. There have been more

than 30 eruptions recorded since 1616. An eruption in

1993 caused 79 deaths. Subsequently eruptions in 200,

2006, 2009,2014,and 2018 forced ten thousands of

people in nearby villages to evacuate. In December

2006, rains from powerful Typhoon Durian caused

mudslides and floods at the foot of the volcano that

killed more than 1,000 people. Its most destructive

eruption was in 1815, when the town of Cagsawa was

buried and approximately 1,200 people were killed .
