Corporal Magdalena Leones becomes one of the lesser­known veterans of the Second World War, as she's the only
Asian woman to have been granted the Silver Star by the United States in the Second World War. Raised in the Kalinga
Mountains, Leones has been the daughter of an evangelical missionary. Since she tried to surrender after the fall of
Bataan, she had been jailed for five months. Throughout that time, she trained herself how and when to speak
Niponggo, an ability she used to help save other Japanese­captured Filipinos' lives. After meeting Colonel Russel
Volckman of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines­North Luzon (USAFIP­NL), she decided to work as a
special agent. Through her church contacts and her niponggo­speaking abilities, she could bring valuable information,
essential radio parts and medical supplies across Japanese­held territory. While she realized that capture could lead to
torture and execution, she went through and continued to support her nation, earning her the lioness of the Filipino
guerrilla agents. Magdalena Leones was arrested several times, but she could leave every time because of her
cleverness and sweet talk.
These five women are some Filipino heroes who have shown how they can, indeed, fight. Highlight some of these
courageous ladies. Most of all, the lesser­known heroines who were not mentioned in our history books but still fought
for their fellow countrymen and their nation.
