Problem 2:

The synthesis of methane enriched gas from water gas is a promising

solution to the problem of hydrocarbon shortages in the future. In one such
process, the following gas composition is obtained: 34% methane, 3% carbon
dioxide, 11% CO, 39% H 2 ,∧13 %   N 2 .Determine the Gross Calorific Value and
the Net Calorific Value of the gas.

Given:
CH4 = 34 % = 0.34 , H2 = 39% = 0.39
CO2 = 3 % = 0.03
N 2 = 13 % = 0.13
CO = 11 % = 0.11

Required:
a. Gross Calorific Value
b. Net Calorific Value

Solution:
Basis: 1 kgmol of natural gas
Gas n Hc, nxHc At H MW n x MW

Where Lc = Latent heat of condensation
Where Lc = 44.04 MJ/kg mol of water

moles water from fuel combustion

NCV = GCV- × Lc of water

NCV = 398.4972 MJ

Answer:
a. Gross Calorific Value = 445.62 MJ
b. Net Calorific Value = 398.4972 MJ or 398.50 MJ
