There have been several revolts in the Spanish period. One of them is the KKK or Kataas­taasang, Kagalang­
galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, which assumed a united Filipino Society fight against the Spaniards for
the pure freedom of the nation. Previous armed rebellions had already occurred before the Katipunan was founded,
and neither of them had dreamed of a united Filipino community revolting against its colonizers.
We all remember that Andres Bonifacio is the leader of this organization, yet Emilio Jacinto was the Utak ng Katipunan.
After all, because Katipunan is a huge organization, Emilio wrote the Kartilya ng Katipunan. It was a code of conduct
that shows how to be a real Filipino in words and actions. It highlights all the thirteen lessons that serve as Katipuneros'
guide to living with morality and good values.
The first lesson was for living a life of purpose. Life is a gift given to everyone who needs to be cherished by making it
meaningful through setting goals and achieving them, no matter how difficult it is. The second lesson is about doing the
right thing. Everyone must bear in mind that doing good must be accompanied by compassion. The act that is being
done must be because of what someone feels like doing to help others. The third one shows what the real essence of
kindness is. It only means that having an open hand to help without waiting in return is one of the best examples to
show an act of kindness. The fourth lesson is that of equality between people. The Fifth shows what honor is meant for
the Katipunero. The sixth is about trying to make the idea of putting into action the words that have been promised. The
seventh lesson emphasizes how we handle our time and give our best as tomorrow ends because time is precious. The
eighth lesson convinces everyone to fight for what's right and to fight with the people on the right. The ninth is really
about the value of trust that everyone needs to know how to keep information private to preserve the belief that others
offer. The tenth lesson is to be able to lead the family. The eleventh lesson demonstrates that all a man must look at the
identity of a woman. He is not allowed to see her as an item. The twelfth lesson gives priority to any action that one has
to take. The thirteenth lesson is about one's knowledge of how to have the right character in coping with life. Life is not
determined by its position in society or by the objects it owns. It is based on his character and his love for the native
country. It highlights the optimism that he has for others and believes that any sacrifice that Katipunero makes will
always be worth it.
Again, Kartilya ng Katipunan is a collection of principles that demonstrate how each one of us must live by living by
good values to the fullest. I have learned and believe that this Kartilya ng Katipunan has been done to change the mind
of every Filipino's unacceptable behavior. Katipunan was not just an organization that works for the liberation of the
Filipino people. They stood on the ideological and political base of men and women who sacrificed everything for their
love of the nation and the people.
Looking back to the past, the journey to freedom is long and challenging. The price of courage and principle is high.
Back then, they felt that the day of true independence would remain a fantasy forever. And through Kartilya ng
Katipunan, the Filipinos were united to fight for what they had. .Kartilya ng Katipunan has become an obligation that
every Katipuneros must obey to show their commitment to being part of the people who wanted independence.
Unfortunately, as time passes, this set of values has not been performed by some katipuneros that have led to a conflict
among them.
