1. Check proposal of Pipe Culverts as per CA i.

e diameter and number of pipe culverts proposed in

CA shall match with drawing.
2. GAD of pipe culvert shall be as per TCS i.e. latest consented by Highway department not the one
given in CA.
3. Plan and profile shall be checked to verify FRL’s mentioned and to check whether Pipe culvert is
in skew or square and the same shall be reflected in GAD as well.
4. Length of the pipe culvert shall be as per standard drawings given in IRC SP 13 i.e. 1:2 ratio for
fill must be satisfied at the edges. If it is not satisfied then ask to give detail calculations of head
walls for high cushion or increase the length of pipe culvert in upto which the earth fill has free
falling slope of 1:2 ratio.
5. In accordance with Article 21 of IRC: SP: 13, Invert Level should be kept at 300mm below the
lowest Bed Level.
6. Head walls as per IRC SP 13 are designed for 1:2 ratio of fill and not for high cushion. Hence if
that ratio is more then ask to submit calculations for Head walls or to increase the length of
culverts.
7. If the total length of culverts is more i.e like 40m something then ask to provide chamber in
median portion for easy maintenance of pipe culverts or a manhole in between for maintenance
purpose.
8. In accordance with Clause 7.7(iii) of IRC SP 84:2014 minimum depth of earth cushion over pipe
excluding road crust shall not be less than 600mm for New/Reconstruction/retained Culverts.
9. Also the difference between FRL at the Extreme Edge and top of Pipe culvert shall not be less
than 600mm+GSB+WMM+DBM+BC ( i.e. for flexible pavement) or 600mm+PQC+DLC+GSB (i.e.
for rigid pavement). The pavement thicknesses shall be taken from latest consented TCS by
highway department.
10. If the above two i.e. 8 and 9 do not satisfy then encasing of pipe in concrete shall be ensured.
11. Minimum grade of concrete for encasing shall be M20 in reinforced concrete.
12. Thickness of encasing shall be minimum 200mm in all four sides.
13. Reinforcement of encasing shall be minimum 8 mm or 10 mm at 200 mmc/c.
14. Check proposed Invert levels and FRl’s and make sure they satisfy the earth fill depth mentioned
15. Vent size of culvert shall be as per levels mentioned.
16. Protection works i.e floor apron shall be minimum 1.5m on upstream and 3.0m on downstream.
17. PCC leveling course leveling below head wall shall be minimum 150mm thick.
18. Pipe shall be of NP4 as mentioned in IS 458.
19. Type of joint shall be internal flush/spigot and socket joint as mentioned in IS 458.
20. The joint details shall be as per IS 458.
21. Slope of pipe culvert shall be 1 in 1000.
22. Head wall details shall be as per IRC SP 13 A3 i.e. standard drawings.
23. Type of bedding provided below pipe shall be as per IRC SP 13 A3 i.e. standard drawings.
24. Minimum diameter of new proposed pipe culverts shall be 1.2m.
25. Pipes of diameter 900mm can be widened as per IRC SP 84 Manuals.
26. Minimum grade of concrete for head wall shall be M15 in plain cement concrete.
27. If other than head walls any other wall is proposed whose dimensions and geometry is not
matching with head walls of IRC SP13 then detailed calculations shall be asked.
28. Partial encasing shall not be accepted. i.e example at RE wall location for Service road encasing
is provided and for Main carriageway encasing is not provided. Hence encasing shall be provided
up to minimum of 2.0m in main carriageway as well.
29. In case the site has hill on one side and valley on the other side then collection chambers are
generally provided in hill side to drain the water easily in pipe culvert and a retaining wall on the
valley side.
30. At RE wall locations arrangement shall be made on pipe culverts.
31. The size of marker pillar shall be 400mm x 400mm x 1000mm as per IRC SP 13 standard
drawings.
32. Breast walls cannot be proposed on valley side. Hence, always a Retaining wall only shall be
proposed on Valley side and Breast wall on Hill Side.
