Background:

Dietary supplements are consumed worldwide due to the numerous health benefits it provides. S.
platensis and folic acid are two common dietary supplements consume for the enhancement of general
health.

Methods:

Fifteen female ICR strain mice were randomly divided into 3 equal groups for treatment. Group A
serve as negative control, group B were treated with 200 mg/kg/ BW/day of S. platensis and group C
were treated with 200 mg/kg BW/day of S. platensis plus 3 mg/kg BW/day of folic acid. The feeding
was carried out via oral gavage needle for 4 weeks. At the end of the study, the animals were
sacrificed by cervical dislocation. The organs were harvested and processed using routine
haematoxylin and eosin staining techniques. Histological evaluations of the tissues were made to
study the effects of S. platensis and folic acid supplementations on the tissue as compared to the
negative control.

Results:

S. platensis and S. platensis plus folic acid treatment groups showed absence of abnormal physical
appearance and showed a higher weight gain than the negative control. Histological examination
revealed that there were no deleterious effects seen on each major organ as compared to the negative
control. Histological changes observed are the presence of red blood cells, inflammatory cells, active
Kupffer cells and others in the liver. While in kidney, decrease in the Bowman’s space and increase in
the size of glomerulus were observed in the treatment groups as compared to the negative control.
There were no significant changes observed in the heart and lungs of the treated groups as compared
to the negative control.

Conclusion:

Consumption of S. platensis and S. platensis in combination with folic acid by the mice showed
weight gain that correlates with a good health status. There were no pathological changes observed.
Minor histological changes were seen in the liver and kidney as liver functions as a metabolizing
organ while kidney functions as an excreting organ. Further study can be done using a diseased model
to elucidate the positive effects of S. platensis and folic acid.
