Introduction
 Do daily warm up with the kids
 Remind students that we talked about plagiarism yesterday and we
started practicing how to take notes, so we are not copying exactly

 Today we are going to do a bit more work on this and then talk about
how anytime we take information off a website or book we need to
cite it.
Taking Notes
 Explain to students that the first thing they will do is to write their
notes about pigs as pets into a paragraph.
 Have a few students share this information.
 Show students the information online about Malawi languages

 Go over the key words and have them write down key words. Then
put it away and have them write a few sentences in their own words.
 Have students share their writing with a partner.
 Review why it is so important to put things in your own words.
Lesson on Citations
 Ask students if they know what citations are.
 Go over slides about citations.

 Give an example on the board (PowerPoint) of an online source and a
book. Really emphasize where we can find the information.

 Hand out the books to half the kids (2 on 12 desks) and have the other done quickly

 They will go around the class and fill in the proper information in each
box. Show them the categories that they need find stuff for.
 Remind students that they can go on kiddle or learn alberta (project
the website paper onto the whiteboard)
 Review expectations of going around the class and finding the practice this
information. Remind them that they must keep working. skill
 Circulate as students work through their worksheet.
 At 11:25 have the students clean up the books and sanitize and put
away the laptops.

5 min  Have all students sit in their desk and share some of their results.

Closure
 Review that we do citations to show where we get the information
from – so we are not stealing other peoples words/ information. Tell

them that lots of people do research and follow all these steps when
doing it. Then explain that Mrs. Wall is going to tell them about the
research she has done.
