MODULE 1 IN Research 1 for the

Health Sciences
► Welcome to our Class in Research 1. This is basically intended for the Health
Sciences to which we belong. Topics that will be covered in this Module are the
following:

► B. Methodological Foundation
► Quantitative
► Qualitative
► Knowledge and Methods
►       C. Levels of Evidence
►       D. Phases of the Research Process
► Observations & Experiences
► Significance of the Study/social value
► Identifying the framework to be used in the study
►     Theoretical
►      Conceptual
► Defining the Variables
► Stating the Hypothesis
DISCUSSION
Significance of Research to the Health Sciences
1. It improves life because
It is essential to find out which treatments work better for patients.
It plays an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure that
we use existing treatments in the best possible ways.
Research can find answers to things that are unknown, filling gaps in knowledge
and changing the way that healthcare professionals work.
Some of the common aims for conducting research studies are to

1.Diagnose diseases and health problems

2. Prevent the development or recurrence of disease and reduce the
number of people who become ill
3. Treat illness to improve survival rates or increase the number of
people who are cured
4. Improve the quality of life for people living with illness

What is  Health Research in general It is a
combination of “science and technology”
ULTIMATE AIM OF RESEARCH

► “To improve the discipline”

Quantitative Method or Approach

► Quantitative research is a research strategy that

focuses on quantifying the collection and analysis of
data. It is formed from a deductive approach where
emphasis is placed on the testing of theory, shaped
by empiricist and positivist philosophies.
Methodological foundation of research

Quantitative Method

Qualitative Method

Knowledge Method
Qualitative Method or approach

► Qualitative research relies on data obtained by the researcher from

first-hand observation, interviews, questionnaires, focus groups,
participant-observation, .
► The objective of quantitative research is to develop and
employ mathematical models, theories,
and hypotheses pertaining to phenomena. The process
of measurement is central to quantitative research
because it provides the fundamental connection
between empirical observation and mathematical
expression of quantitative relationships.
Knowledge and Methods

► Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or

understanding of someone or something, such as
facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is
acquired through experience or education by
perceiving, discovering, or
learning. Knowledge can refer to a theoretical or
practical understanding of a subject.
Criteria of a good research

Follows the mnemonic FINER

1. Feasible
2. Interesting
3. Novel
4. Ethical
5. Relevant
