Assumptions about Evaluation of Students
during a Simulated Clinical Experience
1. Evaluation is a difficult, complex process.
2. The evaluation process contributes to learning.
3. Immediacy of feedback improves learning.
4. In order for evaluation to be effective, there must be clearly
defined outcomes.
5. Without clearly defined outcomes, an evaluation of a simulation
will be subjective.
6. Any faculty involved in the evaluation of the simulation need to
agree on the minimum outcomes for student performance in a
simulation.
7. Evaluation encompasses all aspects of the simulation experience
including student preparation for the experience, performance
during the simulation, completion of written assignments and the
debriefing.
8. Evaluation should be a part of the debriefing process of every
simulation.
9. Peer feedback during the debriefing process has value.
10. Students should be encouraged to express feelings and should not
be evaluated on what is shared.
11. Students perceive value to being evaluated during a simulation.
12. Students can provide valuable insight into their performance.
13. Self‐reflection is a critical component to the development of a
professional.
14. The process of evaluating performance in a simulation will
contribute to improved clinical performance.
