Exercise 6.2

1. Using the number line write the integer which is:

(a) 3 more than 5

First, we mark 5 and move 3 steps to the right and reach 8.

So, 3 more than 5 is 8

(b) 5 more than –5

First, we mark -5 and move 5 steps to the right and reach 0.

So, 5 more than -5 is 0

(c) 6 less than 2

First, we mark 2 and move 6 steps to the left and we get -4.
So, 6 less than 2 is -4

(d) 3 less than –2

First, we mark -2 and move 3 steps to the left and we get -5.
So, 3 less than -2 is -5

2. Use number line and add the following integers:

(a) 9 + (– 6)

First, we move 9 steps to the right from 0, then we move 6 steps to the left and we
reach 3. Therefore, 9 + (-6) = 3

(b) 5 + (– 11)

First, we move 5 steps to the right from 0, then we move 11 steps to the left and we
reach -6. Therefore, 5 + (-11) = -6

(c) (– 1) + (– 7)

First, we move 1 step to the left from 0, then we again move 7 steps to the left and
we reach -8. Therefore, (– 1) + (– 7) = -8

(d) (– 5) + 10

CLASS: SUBJECT: Prepared by:
VI MATHS SABNA ABHIN

First, we move 5 steps to the left from 0, then we move 10 steps to the right and we
reach 5. Therefore, (– 5) + 10 = +5

(e) (– 1) + (– 2) + (– 3)

First, we move 1 step to the left from 0, then we again move 2 steps to the left,
then we again move 3 steps to the left and we reach -6.
Therefore, (– 1) + (– 2) + (– 3) = -6

(f) (– 2) + 8 + (– 4)

First, we move 2 steps to the left from 0, then we again move 8 steps to the right,
then we again move 4 steps to the left and we reach 2.

Therefore, (– 2) + 8 + (– 4) = 2

3. Add without using number line:

(a) 11 + (– 7)
Ans: +4

(b) (– 13) + (+ 18)

Ans: +5

(c) (– 10) + (+ 19)

Ans: -100

(e) (– 380) + (– 270)

Ans: -650

(f) (– 217) + (– 100)

Ans: -317

4. Find the sum of:

(a) 137 and – 354
Ans:137 + -354
= -217

(b) – 52 and 52
Ans: -52 + (+52)
=0

(c) – 312, 39 and 192

Ans: (-312) + (+39) + (+192)
= (39 + 192) + (-312)
= 231 + (-312)
= -81

(d) – 50, – 200 and 300

Ans: 300 + (-50) + (-200)
= 300 + (-250)
= 50

5. Find the sum:

(a) (– 7) + (– 9) + 4 + 16
Ans: (– 7) + (– 9) + 4 + 16
= (-16) + (20)
= +4

(b) (37) + (– 2) + (– 65) + (– 8)

Ans: (37) + (– 2) + (– 65) + (– 8)
= (37) + (-75)
= -38

EXERCISE 6.3
1. Find
(a) 35 – (20)
Ans: (35) + (-20)
= 15

(b) 72 – (90)

2. Fill in the blanks with >, < or = sign.

(a) (– 3) + (– 6) ______ (– 3) – (– 6)

Ans: (– 3) + (– 6) ______ (– 3) – (– 6)
(– 3) + (– 6) ______ (-3) + (+6)
-9 _______ +3
-9 < +3
Therefore, (– 3) + (– 6) < (– 3) – (– 6)

(b) (– 21) – (– 10) _____ (– 31) + (– 11)

Ans: (– 21) – (– 10) _____ (– 31) + (– 11)

(-21) + (+10) _____ (-31) + (-11)
-11 ______ -42
-11 > -42
Therefore, (– 21) – (– 10) > (– 31) + (– 11)

(c) 45 – (– 11) ______ 57 + (– 4)

Ans: 45 – (– 11) ______ 57 + (– 4)

45 + (+11) ______ 57 + (-4)
56 ______ 53
56 > 53
Therefore, 45 – (– 11) > 57 + (– 4)

(d) (– 25) – (– 42) _____ (– 42) – (– 25)

Ans: (– 25) – (– 42) _____ (– 42) – (– 25)

(-25) + (+42) _____ (-42) + (+25)
17 _______ -17

17 > -17
Therefore, (– 25) – (– 42) > (– 42) – (– 25)

Additive Inverse
The additive inverse of a number a is the number that, when added to a,
yields zero. Zero is the additive inverse of itself.
eg: Additive Inverse of 8 = -8
Additive Inverse of -12 = 12

3. Fill in the blanks.

(a) (– 8) + _____ = 0
Ans: +8

(b) 13 + _____ = 0
Ans: -13

(c) 12 + (– 12) = ____

Ans: 0

(d) (– 4) + ____ = – 12
Ans: -8

(e) ____ – 15 = – 10
Ans: +5

4. Find

(a) (– 7) – 8 – (– 25)
Ans: (– 7) – 8 – (– 25)
= (-7) + (-8) + (+25)
= -15 + 25
= 10

(b) (– 13) + 32 – 8 – 1
