BATS IN THE WILD

Are you afraid of bats? Well, imagine two million bats flying over your head! That’s what you’ll see
if you visit the Old Tunnel just outside Fredericksburg, Texas. You’ll find it in a wildlife area some 24
kilometres south of Fredericksburg. The place covers about 16 acres of beautiful countryside and
includes a wonderful nature road which is open all the year round. You can spend your days hiking
and birdwatching, or learning about the plants and history of the zone with a local guide. But the
real attraction is the bats, so go to the observatory deck just outside the Old Tunnel about an hour
before the sun sets. You’ll see a few circling bats near the entrance, then suddenly the sky will get
dark when the bats come out of the tunnel. It takes over an hour for the bats to emerge! It’s like a
movie scene; in fact, spectators open their mouths in surprise. According to Park Ranger Ian
Parsons, “That old idea about bats flying into a person’s hair is just a myth. Their radar systems are
so precise, that they can ‘see’ perfectly well.”
