CHEMISTRY PAPER 2
1 hour

This paper must be answered in English.

INSTRUCTIONS

(1) This paper consists of THREE sections, Section A, Section B and Section C. Attempt ALL questions in
any TWO sections.
(2) Write your answers in the Answer Book provided. Start each question (not part of a question) on a new
page.
(3) A Periodic Table is printed on the back of this Question Book. Atomic numbers and relative atomic masses
of elements can be obtained from the Periodic Table.

Section A Industrial Chemistry

Answer ALL parts of the question.

1. (a) Haber process is a important industrial process in manufacture of ammonia. In practice, the
percentage of ammonia in the gas mixture never rises above 16%. Even though the yield is low, the
process is still profitable.

(i) Give TWO reasons for this fact.

(ii) Suggest a large-scale use of ammonia in cleaning.

(3 marks)

(b) The graphs below give the percentage of product in an equilibrium mixture at constant pressure
(Figure 1) and constant temperature (Figure 2) of a reversible reaction:

X + Y Z

(i) By using information from the two graphs, give TWO methods to increase the yield of Z.

(ii) In practice, the conditions chosen for the synthesis of Z are 750K and 230 atm. Justify this
choice.

(iii) The rate constant for the above reaction is 3.12 x 10-5 s-1 at 180 °C and activation energy is
110 kJ. Calculate the rate constant of the reaction at 210 °C.

(c) The reaction of chlorine with butanone in acidic medium can be represented by the following equation:

Cl2(aq) + CH3COCH2CH3 (aq) CH2ClCOCH2CH3 (aq) + H+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)

The following initial rates and initial concentrations were obtained in an experiment at 298 K:

Trials Initial concentration/mol dm-3 Initial rate/ mol dm-3 s-1

[Cl2(aq)] [CH3COCH2CH3 (aq)] [H+(aq)]
1 2.5 x 10-4 2.0 x 10-1 5.0 x 10-3 3.5 x 10-5
2 1.5 x 10-4 2.0 x 10-1 5.0 x 10-3 3.5 x 10-5
3 2.5 x 10-4 4.0 x 10-1 1.0 x 10-2 1.4 x 10-4
4 2.5 x 10-4 4.0 x 10-1 5.0 x 10-3 7.0 x 10-5

(i) Deduce the rate equation for the reaction.

(ii) Calculate the rate constant for the reaction at 298 K.

(iii) The following graph shows the distribution of butan-2-one molecules at 298K. Copy the graph
to your answer book,

(1) Labels the axes

(2) Sketch a curve to show the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of propanone at 398K.

(3) Draw a line to show the activation energy.

(iv) Explain why the change in rate, of the chemical reaction with an increase in temperature from
298K to 398K.

Section C Analytical Chemistry

Answer ALL parts of the question.

3. (a) Five labeled test-tubes A, B, C, D and E consisted of the following colourless chemicals:

2 mol dm-3 KHCO3(aq),

2 mol dm-3 KOH(aq),
2 mol dm-3 HNO3(aq),
2 mol dm-3 H2CO3(aq) and ,
A mixture of phenolphthalein and water.

Without using the other chemicals, the following experiments were performed to identify the
chemicals in each beaker.

Test Observation
A+ D Mixture changes to red
A+ C Low temperature rises
A+ B Large temperature rises
B+D Remain colourless
C+E Colourless bubbles evolve

(i) Deduce the chemicals in the five labeled test-tubes. Explain your deduction.

(ii) Give the observable change if

(1) B is added to E.

(2) C is added to D.

mass of C is 54.55% and O is 36.36%: The molecular mass is 88. In the infrared spectrum, it shows a
broad absorption between 3320 —3610 cm-1 and absorption at 1710 cm-1.

(i) Determine the empirical formula and molecular formula of Y.

(ii) By using the provided IR correlation table,

Characteristic infrared absorption wavenumber ranges
