Description of the Start-up Business Company

1.1. Business Name

Scholars Child Care Services

1.2. Description of Business

Upon commencement, Scholars Child Care Services will focus on building an inclusive

community which in addition to offering basic services across the broad streams, including;

full-time child day care, one on one coaching sessions, speech therapy and psychoeducation

therapy, will promote activity based learning for fine tuning of cognitive skills.

1.3. Form of Business Ownership

At the initial stage, the business will be owned and managed by four partners, each with an

equal stake of 25% equity in the business. Two of the partners are expected to be actively

involved in the daily operations and management decisions, while the limited partners are

expected to be involved in only strategic planning functions.

Some key reasons for opting for partnership as the form of ownership at the onset include the

larger pool of funds available, as well as skills and knowledge, ease of formation and tax

benefits which allows business expenses to be charged from personal income.

1.4. Ideal Customer

The ideal customer could be anyone above the age of 5 years with low-medium income level,

who identifies himself as a person who needs special care. The support from the government

is a key factor in driving enrolment numbers, in terms of subsidies to parents/guardians to

cover some part of their fees.

1.5. The Business Advantage

The foremost advantage from this business proposition is to give value back to society by

attending to needs of special children in a professional manner. There are a number of other

unique selling points which will be explained later in the report under product features and

benefits.

1.6. Ethical Issues

It is critical for all businesses to have a basic code of conduct to maintain business integrity.

In our business we are taking care of disabled children, children who have autism spectrum

disorder; therefore code of conduct helps our workers to take care of these children and

decision making in practicing implementation. Three Core principles which our business

follow is:

A. Value each and every child.

B. Encourage Development of each child to achieve their potential in all aspects of

cognitive functioning.

C. Oppose any discrimination, exploitation of any child and communicate their rights so

that they can speak up.

1.7. Social Responsibility

In our daycare business, our social responsibility is towards the disabled children who are

getting special services. We must think about the privacy rights of children who are admitted

in our daycare and also parents who are admitting their children.

Managing the Business

2.1. Mission Statement

The mission of Scholars Child Care Services is to improve the quality of life of disabled

students by developing essential skills, knowledge, values and providing access to all

programs they desire to learn with the most effective and efficient faculty. Thus, ensuring

they can have a secured future. We provide an alternative to traditional infant, day and after

school care; we not only meet your child’s special care needs, but also provide an activity-

based learning environment that mirrors those in regular schools. Scholars Child Care

Services is a community of professional caregivers with the credentials to enhance your

child's early social and motor skills.

2.2. Business Goals

Primary business goal the Company intends to achieve within the first year of operation is to

set up operation as a facility to care for children and provide a structured learning

environment. This would involve setting up a strong online presence for catering to needs of

disabled community. From providing therapy to virtual learning, practical approaches will be

taken to ensure holistic development of children. In all, the Company expects enrolment for

about 100 children within the first year.

Scholars Child Care Services intends to provide high quality caregiving and educational

programs delivered by degreed and certified educators, childcare workers, tutors,

psychologist, and speech therapists in a technologically advanced environment.

Further to this, achieving noticeable growth and development in the children under their care

is one of the features the company intends to set as a foundation for further growth in

operation. As such, given the special needs of the children, it is expected that as a measure of

progress, quantifiable improvements are noted in the child’s developmental abilities, both

physical and cognitive. For instance, measuring a child’s handling skills, speech clarity,

social acceptance by learning from and playing with each other to foster strong team bond,
achieving physical health by learning how to care for themselves, and developing the

intellectual ability to think for themselves.

Down the line, over the medium to long term horizon, a couple of business objectives the

Company intends to achieve include:

Creating top notch reputation for maintaining a highly regarded service for excellence in care

giving, education and community involvement and being the employer of repute in the

childcare industry with interest from highly regarded professionals.

From the end of year 2, the Company intends to have fully settled into operations with clearly

defined policies and plans, with matching implementation level to ensure the intake level

continues to rack up, while also ensuring that the best set of professionals give their best at all

times. Accordingly, this should usher in an era of profitability from the third year, with

various measures being implemented, including efficient cost control measures, strict

adherence to budgets in accordance with company goals, as well as adherence to strategic

business plans for growth.

2.3. SWOT Analysis

Strengths

- Facilitated by a team of professionals

- Offering top-notch childcare services, which is in line with the provincial curriculum,

the like of which is not offered by any institution within a 5 km radius

- Scholars Child Care Services will be one of only a handful of childcare service

providers catering to special needs in the city through an online presence

- The center will be located in an area with a high percentage of working parents

serving as a base to grow demand for childcare.

Weakness:

- Owners have limited experience of the childcare industry, but this will be mitigated

by an experienced management team.

- Typically the start-up costs are quite high, including lease, kitchen, insurance,

utilities, and daily operational costs.

- Complex procedures and high licensing costs and other compliance requirements with

Municipal, Provincial and Federal laws

Opportunities:

- Huge potential for growth given the limited number of special childcare services in

the area.

- Revenue growth is almost assured, as the childcare services are reliant on government

support in the form of providing subsidized payments to children of families with low

income. This guarantees continued patronage.

Threats:

- Intense competition from the more established childcare centres.

- Possibility of legal cases, with attendant ramifications on operations for any neglect or

abuse, which could be unavoidable even in the best of situations.

- Relative scarcity of qualified and experienced personnel.

2.4. Management

The childcare service will essentially be run by various professionals at different levels of

management, who will plan, control, organize and lead processes and procedures daily. The

three basic levels of management are top, middle, and first-line management, with most firms

having more middle managers than top managers and more first line managers than middle

managers (Ebert, Griffin, Dracopolous, Starke, 2014, page 118). A similar structure would be
replicated at Scholar Child Care service, with the online agent connect available through

initiating a chat on the website; the support supervisor (managing agents) being the first line

manager, the professionals, including the tutors, psychologists and speech therapist are

among those in the middle level management. The top-level management would comprise the

two active partners, who are able to formulate strategic plans as well as implementation

framework. These managers are expected to function mostly in the operational sphere, as

well as human resources, marketing, and Finance.

2.5. Organizational Chart

2.6. Corporate Culture

Corporate culture underlies the organizational beliefs which determine how employees and

management interact and handle outside business transactions. A top-performance company

is that organizational structure that is successfully gaining value from the human potential it
manages (Fuller, 2015, page 15). In view of the above, and given the customer-focussed

business we operate, the plan is to have a strong organizational culture that reflects the spirit

of teamwork, co-operation, relationship building, among others. Accordingly, a Team-First

corporate culture will be actively pursued, with employees and management expected to

engage in activities that actively build strong customer relationships and trust. With this in

play, employee behaviours are expected to align towards making friends with colleagues in

other departments, providing thoughtful feedback to management and regularly socializing

outside work engagements. This would help develop the spirit of togetherness, providing a

base to care and impact knowledge into the children.

2.7. Leadership Philosophy

From the management perspective, it is believed that a leadership philosophy is the belief

system that guides decision-making, consisting of core principles, perspectives, and values.

In this regard, the adopted leadership philosophy would be the servant-leader style, serving to

define who we are, shaping behaviours, strategies, and decisions.

According to Keith (2008) “A servant-leader loves people and wants to help them. The

mission of a servant-leader is, therefore, to identify the needs of others and try to satisfy those

needs”. Accordingly, the management will endeavour to be more relational with employees,

treating team members with care and respect. Managers are thus expected to take the lead on

projects/assignments, showing the lead and putting in the right attitude that motivates

performance. Added to this, while noticing a drop in performance or enthusiasm of an

employee, it is imperative to get to know the challenges being faced and proffering

approaches to improve the situation in order to ensure performance returns to normalcy.

2.10. Training Employees

Training is a program that helps employees to acquire particular skills and knowledge to

enhance performance in their respective roles. School support plays a significant role in

ensuring learners are studying in friendly and supportive learning environments (Dhar, 2015).

In our case, to run and manage an autistic school. It involves equipping the employees with
specific skills such as computing skills, practical communication skills, childcare practices,

and customer relations.

Thus an apprenticeship training period is necessary. These jobs need an extended period of

practice and experience aided by apprenticeship strategies to understand the complexities and

intricacies of the various jobs (Dhar, 2015). Well planned and executed Training permits the

integration of best aspects in on-the-job and off-the-job training.

Provision of Training:

Off the job, Training-This method involves Training that is provided away from the actual

work environment. This is mostly used in cases of new staff or workers. Cases of off the job

training approaches are workshops, conferences, and seminars. This method is costly though

most effective, where large numbers of employees need to be trained within a brief period. It

is also referred to as vestibule training, where the employees are trained in separate

designated areas like a hall, reception area, or entrance (usually called a vestibule) where the

actual occupation conditions are duplicated.

On the job training- This type of Training accorded to employees in the day-to-day working

of a concern. The method is cost-effective and straightforward, which involves training semi-

proficient and un-proficient employees. Examples of on job training include job-rotation,

temporary promotions, and coaching.

The total expenses for the Training will be approximately $1500 for the starter course.

2.11. Compensation

Compensation is a significant aspect of retaining skilled workers, which is the complete set of

rewards that an organization offers to its employees in return for their labor. The top part of
this compensation system is wages and salaries. The salary rates are referenced based on the

Labor Statistics (Canada) ("National Compensation & Benefits Survey 2019”). The salary

choices were set on market pay rates established via market pay explorations.

2.12. Incentives

Incentives and rewards in the job environment are significant for both employers and

employees. When employees are recognized for exceptional performance, they increase their

morale, job satisfaction, and organizational roles (Freedman, 2020). For this case, employers

observe greater efficiency and a rise in productivity and sales due to incentives awarded to

employees.

The incentives or programs our organization will use to motivate the workforce will include:

Employee Recognition Programs

Employee recognition programs involve long-term job place traditions, such as "employee of

the month" placards and other kinds of tangible awards. Customizing my incentive plans to

suit the individual personnel's interests and needs is essential.

Compensation incentive programs

Financial incentives like bonuses for exemplary attendance and top performance status drive

ethical competition among workers, thus boosting self-esteem and productivity. Establishing

a profit-sharing program providing employees with a percentage of my organization's profits

over their average wages and salaries promotes employees' loyalty and productivity, thus

increasing organizational functions.

Incentive travel

Through incentive travel schedules, we will award our employees for achieving specific goals

and organizational strategies by offering them often multiday trips. This might be costly to
undertake since the company has to cater to all expenses or most of the trip's costs, though a

massive potential for improved employee loyalty and productivity.

Extra time off

Along with the regular time-off program, we will give our workers extra time to realize

various specific objectives and goals, for instance, ultimate attendance or securing a separate

special essential agreement with new customers. The employee may feel much appreciation,

motivation, and cared when given leave after unusual immense labor needs.

Wellness programs

Work sometimes is tedious and tiresome, and employees go through much disruptions and

fatigue to their occupation and life state of balance. It is occasionally challenging for the

employees to pay attention to their health; thus, offering a staff health plan incentivizes both

their work and health. Most of the employees will appreciate a workplace well-being program

that considers the health needs through policies, activities, and other changes.

Learning and development programs

Learning and development strategies are useful, especially to nurture and retain top talent

within the organization. Generally, top go-getters in an organization will always desire to

learn more and advance their skills to high-level roles. Such professional development plans

within my organization will give employees opportunities to enhance their appropriate skills

and discover career choices. These programs help employees decrease turnover, mainly if I

engage the programs' career training features to train top employees for a high-ranking

obligation within the organization design.

Industry Analysis

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences showed that the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that autism affects 1 in 54 children. Despite a clear

federal mandate, therapeutic and awareness goals and supporting resources available are

limited.

3.1. Consumers variables and trends

As our target audience is autistic children, the market segment in which we are operating,

variables and trends are-

➢ Demographic segmentation: Age, education, gender, income, race, social class,

household size

➢ Psychographic segmentation: Lifestyle, personality, interests, values, attitudes

➢ Benefit segmentation: Benefits provided by the good or service.

Demographic segmentation:

Demographics such as age, education, gender, income, and household size can prove to be an

indispensable tool to differentiate amongst various market trends. Demographic information

is relatively easy to obtain, however it may not always be the best approach to segmentation

because it is limited on what it can reveal about the consumers. According to the Handbook

of Parent Child Interact therapy for Children on the Autism Spectrum close continual

monitoring of the data is important in achieving high quality results from any organisation

attempting to treat autism. The demographic data provides some basic but useful data to

guide the management regarding the trends influencing the target audience and aiming their

focus and resources where it is most needed.

Psychographic segmentation:

Although demographic data can provide some basic information that is vital to initiate the

process, it often fails to paint the entire picture of consumer needs. Psychographic

segmentation builds on the demographic data and provides vital resources often much more

useful in crafting the marketing strategies. The impact of the intervention on individual

patients and their family members needs close monitoring to observe trends. Demographics

provide the framework on which experts then build up using more advanced tools and

techniques. Since the span of presentation of The Autistic spectrum is variable ,it is important

that the institute monitors the response of treatment of each client/student at an individual

level to assess the response to the teaching methods being employed.

Benefit segmentation:

Benefit segmentation is based on what a product will do rather than on consumer

characteristics. Here the product is the service being provided, so the focus would be to

improve the teaching techniques of the instructors. The company can send in open

questionnaires to the parents to assess the effectiveness of the program and techniques being

employed by the instructors. The teachers can further improve their techniques by active

training programs and workshops.

3.2. Economic factors

Economic factors encompass goods, services, and capital. The variables like interest rates,

inflation, recession, and demand/ supply determine the financial state of the economy and

may exhibit a massive impact on the business. The quality of the facilities provided and

services offered to children with autism are subject to all of the factors elaborated above. For

instance, if the inflation rate is high then people don’t have the spending capacity then it

won't be possible for them to spend on children's education (autistic). Similarly, the recession
in the economy (like currently occurring due to COVID) where everything is uncertain.

Providing a facility that offers online courses for the education of Autistic children is

especially beneficial in the present circumstances. In these challenging times when businesses

of all kinds are faced with economic challenges, an online course allows parents and

guardians to seek the much sought-after help and guidelines from the comfort of their own

homes. An online facility is both cost effective and safe.

In the struggle to educate autistic children to adjust in the fast paced modern society, the main

problem the parents face is the affordability of professional help.

3.3. Technological factors

Children with autism disorder are deficit in two areas:

1. Communication and social interaction

2. Repetition patterns in behavior, interest, and activities

We can limit these deficiencies through technology. Children with autism cannot normally

communicate with people. So, children need a medium to control their fear of interaction

with other people. Children can improve their communication and social interaction through

technology. For example, In autism children cannot face another person or make eye contact

with another person but if they see the same person through the digital camera screen then

they could look at another person’s face with the help of a digital camera. In the example, the

camera is a medium to look at another person’s face. Because of the camera, a child is not

afraid to interact or communicate with another person. Technology is a medium to reduce

autism deficiencies. Their deficiencies will be there, but they can deal with them through

technology usage.
Technology is a better medium to teach a child with an autism disorder. Through technology,

a child can study and learn new things because technology does not disturb their daily

routines, and because of the predictability factor children will not be afraid of a computer

system. Teachers could not interact with children with autism disorder personally but if the

interaction is virtual then a teacher can easily communicate with them and teach them like a

normal student. Our e-learning platform provides a facility that will help children to reduce

their deficiencies and improve their learning with the help of technology and interactive

games.

According to a pilot study conducted by Riaza Mohd Rias, Sarah Reisi Dehkordi ( Faculty of

Computer and Mathematical Sciences, University Technology MARA, Malaysia ),

interactive games affect the social skills of children with autism disability. Riaza Mohd Rias,

Sarah Reisi Dehkordi experimented using the Find-Me game on six children with

ASD(Autism Spectrum Disorder). Through this experiment, they found that with interactive

games and usage of technology they can improve the social and interactive skills of children.

Children with ASD can not focus for a longer period but when they are focused, they never

leave any work in the middle and our badge reward will motivate them to complete their

games and daily training. We are using communication tools, video modeling tools, decision-

making tools, motivating tools to improve their communication skills and motivating them

through rewards like badges with completion of every training, up-gradation of their level,

etc. so that they feel like playing games not learning new skills.

3.4. Policy and regulatory force

Education is very important for the inner and outer development of children. If a child is

disabled, then the teacher should focus more on that child to develop his basic skills. Disable

children need more attention and special requirements to adjust to society. Ontario’s
government introduced the Ontario Autism Program for children with Autism Spectrum

Disorder(ASD). In the OAP program, children receive services and supports till the age of 18

years. The childhood budget is included in this program to provide money for purchasing

services for ASD children. Through childhood budget families get $20,000 if a child is under

six-year-old and $5,000 if a child is six-year or older till the age of 18-year-old. The

government is investing $1 million for providing full subsidized training for teachers.

Teachers can gain additional qualifications for teaching children with autism.

The government announced projects like the Autism Spectrum Disorder Strategic fund

( ASDSF ). In budget 2018 $9.1 million were allocated to ASDSF for children with ASD and

their families, and caregivers. In Canada 1 of 66 children are suffering from ASD. The

government is facing many challenges with the increasing number of children with ASD.

Our e-learning platform can help the government for providing basic education and the

development of verbal and non-verbal skills of children. The government is providing full

subsidies to teachers training to gain special qualifications for teaching children with ASD.

We can use these subsidies for training our faculties and improve their skills in teaching.

3.4. Main Competitors

Our main competitors are IXL worldwide and Brain Parade. Both provide e-learning

platforms for disable children.

IXL worldwide has around 10 million users. It provides services to educators and students. It

provides courses from junior kindergarten to grade 12. On this platform educators can teach

mathematics and English through interactive games and students can learn mathematics and

English on their own by subscribing to IXL worldwide. Its subscription price for students

starts from 13 CAD per month. For educators, the subscription price is 299 CAD for 1 year if
you choose mathematics or English. If the educator chooses all-access, then the subscription

price will be 449 CAD. IXL worldwide provides learning material for only mathematics and

English subjects.

Brain parade provides a website platform and phone application(android and iOS) platform to

teach disabled students. It has around 400K users. It provides free, pro, and site subscriptions.

A free subscription gives a demo version of Brain parade features and content. In pro

subscription, it provides a huge library of learning material created by a certified behavior

analyst, custom lessons for each student, access to content shared in the Brain parade

community, data collection, support, and training. A paid subscription is mainly used by

teachers, therapists, and special language pathologists. A site subscription is mainly used by

schools. Pro and site subscriptions have the same features, but schools can use one site

subscription for more than 5 students.

IXL worldwide and Brain parade, both provide high-quality education for disabled students,

but they do not provide interactive sessions with real teachers who have qualifications to

teach disabled children. They just provide a platform and course content, and students must

learn on their own. But in Scholar Care Services, we provide teachers who teach our students

virtually like they are doing their study in a classroom. Our teachers have the qualifications to

teach a child with ASD.

Managing Marketing

4.1. Target Market

In a recent article, it was observed that over 650 million people live with a disability.

Therefore our target market will cover people aged 16 and above, so that people who

are disabled or are taking care of someone dependent on them due to disability can
consider opting for our business, moreover demographic targeting will cover all

genders so that everyone has equal opportunity to learn about the business and come

forward. As most disabled children do not attend school, it is crucial to consider all

education levels when creating marketing objectives, however when it comes to

income level- more emphasis needs to be paid on those having lower per capita

income as poverty plays a major role in misinformation and fewer opportunities to

overcome a disability.

4.2. Product Features and Benefits

A. Quality of professional care- standby nurse, psychologists, speech therapists.

B. Practical curriculum for young adults and children to promote activity based learning

in alignment with the federal laws.

C. Government affiliated, with subsidies to cushion fees for parents/guardians

4.3. Product Differentiation

The user will not only benefit from the positive environment, but will feel inclusive

and part of a community to boost confidence in life skills. The main goal for the

product is not only to make business, but have a social value to disabled sections of

society. Aligning social media campaigns and offline extended support, we would

place emphasis on building a strong community.

4.4. Pricing

To make sure the product is receptive to the target market, we would opt for

Penetration pricing strategy for our product to create a buzz in the target market and

attract potential audience.

4.5. Place (Distribution) Issues

Making it simple and easily accessible to all, customers can sign in to the app or log

in through an online website to start their education. Also, to make an attractive offer

to the target audience, we believe in offering a free demo class which allows users to

join without personally identifiable information, as a guest user. This is to make a step

closer to inclusivity and a connected community where everyone is treated equally.

4.6. Advertising

Primarily would start advertising on digital platforms to create an impression on

potential audiences through display advertising campaigns on Google Ads and

Facebook Ads. Once enough impression share has been acquired, would start with

search and video advertising simultaneously to attract people now actively searching

about the school for research purposes, or as a person of interest or even if they are

looking for a competitor service. Digital marketing has been chosen as the primary

source of spending the advertising revenue as the presence of business is online, and

return on investment through an optimized campaign is higher on online platforms

with a good use of social media, in a lower spend comparatively than using an offline

medium like television or print media.

4.7. Promotions

Main focus for the promotion function is going to be for publicity and public

relations, to complement the advertising campaigns. It is very important to control the

brand reviews and reputation online as word spreads really quickly over the internet.

Therefore, using social media channels and collaborations with influencers supporting

the cause could help build PR for the organization.
