Math Department Meeting Reflection

On September 30, 2020, I got the chance to sit in on a math department meeting for the

Rocky Mountain High School math team. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the

upcoming changes happening with students returning to school on October 19. During this

meeting, the teachers discussed how their classrooms were to be arranged, the supplies they will

be getting to keep themselves and students safe, and what happens if someone in their class gets

sick.

Sitting in on the meeting was an enlightening experience for me as a preservice teacher. I

believe that schools are a community and as a community we have never experienced anything

like what we are currently experiencing now. These upcoming changes are new and frightening

to a lot of teachers. While it is unfortunate that the upcoming changes are inducing stress to our

teachers, staff, and students, it was comforting to see a team work together to make it through

these changes. During the meeting, everyone was offering ways to help their peers, and it

showed that it is okay to ask for help and rely on your peers, not just during these stressful times,

but always.

The largest takeaway from this meeting was that as teachers, we don’t have to do

everything alone. Sitting in on this meeting helped me to learn that it is okay and necessary to

rely on our peers for certain things. Stressful times during the school year can be made easier

through having a dialogue with peers, and it isn’t a sign of weakness or that you are a bad

teacher, if you admit that you need help with something.
