Our Theme Power can ruin anyone and/or everyone if it is given to the wrong person Lord of The Flies “Far off along the beach, Jack was standing before a small group of boys. He was looking brilliantly happy. — ‘We’ll hunt. I’m going to be chief.’ They nodded, and the crisis passed easily.” (#133) “Simon was crying out something “‘I got the conch!’ He shouted ‘I tell you, I got about a dead man on a hill. ‘Kill the the conch!’ Surprisingly, there was a silence beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! now; the tribe were curious to hear what Do him in!’ — The beast struggled amusing thing he might have to say. — The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin forward, broke the ring, and fell over to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand the steep edge of the rock to the sand white fragments and ceased to exist.” by the water.” (#152-153) (#180-181) Explanation As shown before, the only two written (or known) deaths were caused by a different member on the island to gain the power that the main character had once obtained through a vote. The main character had fairly been voted to be the leader right from the beginning to keep everyone organized, but one of the members grew a burning hatred for not being put in charge. He struck out and made his own group, which almost everyone had eventually went to. Both the deaths were characters that had stayed with the main character and the deaths were caused by the actions from members of the other group. War pigs They leave that role to the poor Yeah By: Black Sabbath Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Generals gathered in their masses Treating people just like pawns in chess Just like witches at black masses Wait 'till their judgment day comes Evil minds that plot destruction Yeah! Sorcerers of death's construction Now in darkness world stops turning In the fields the bodies burning Ashes where the bodies burning As the war machine keeps turning No more war pigs have the power Death and hatred to mankind Hand of God has struck the hour Poisoning their brainwashed minds Day of judgment, God is calling Oh lord yeah! On their knees the war pig's crawling Politicians hide themselves away Begging mercy for their sins They only started the war Satan laughing spreads his wings Why should they go out to fight? Oh lord yeah! Explanation The song ‘War Pigs’ by Black Sabbath relates to our theme in the way that the lyrics really tell a story. One of the verses in the song goes “Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerers of death’s construction. In the fields the bodies burning as the war machine keeps turning. Politicians hide themselves away they only started the war, why would they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor.” This means that the politicians have gained all of the power and used it to start a war. To have a war you need soldiers, for this reason the people in power go out and draft the less fortunate people to fight for them. Then the artist proceeds to sing the line “Now in darkness world stops turning, ashes where the bodies burning”. The world is in an state of apocalypse because of the war that was started and that is how power ruined the world in this song. Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson Gore This woman’s name is Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson Gore, also known as “Tipper” gore. She is the estranged wife of the 45th Vice President of the United States. She was an American social issues advocate from 1993 to 2001. Black Sabbath’s music was deemed satanic by her and Her group called parents music resource center because of how many times Ozzy Osbourn called them out on their wrong doings and related it to the devil. one of the songs she tried To get banned was war pigs. The final verse in war pigs has the words “No more war pigs have the power, Hand of God has struck the hour Day of judgement, God is calling On their knees, the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan laughing, spreads his wings Oh lord, yeah! This verse states that the politicians no longer have power and now that they realize what they have done they ask for entrance to heaven. However Satan has seen it all and doesn’t even let them finish. Speak Power to Truth, but Fear not, I'll break it down,

Sometimes we are afraid to speak Truth to of offices. Power. That's right, Power is a bureaucrat who stamps a time Have you ever heard that phrase uttered clock. by some token card pushing sack of potatoes? Every single weekday, as a weak single, I want to know : like you and me, maybe. Who are these Truth and Power characters? Fear not, I'll break it down, Power threw a power trip, extorted, blackmailed me and all, I got was secret meetings behind closed doors, I met Truth in 8th grade, Power threw me out watched friends steal candy from a store, said Wynn we don't need you anymore. then they shouted, "Wynn go take some more." I met Truth a 2nd time when I fell in love I snuck the snack in to my pocket, and had Truth tell me, Wynn admit it, pretended I dropped it. this isn't the stranger you've been dreaming of. Power came again to me,
Entire Poem at a protest in the mall,
said freeze, put your hands in the air, don't move, stay where you are. But I didn't follow Truth's advice, Power wields handcuffs, forged from metal, emotions, or money. Instead I listened to Lie, Power is tall and attractive. and continued to suffer Can be so friendly, sweet like honey. until emotionally I wanted to die. Power is secretly a business partner of everyone in your life. Lie, is another character you will tend to get Power will be there for those who afford to buy its might. involved with. Each day in a mirror Lie reviews your clothes, Lie is the friend who your parents say you should kick out whispers in your ear you should starve, of your house, need to become beautiful, but instead you awkwardly end up inviting to dinner. to lose weight, Lie timed their visit strategically. and change french fries for grapes. To dine at your table for free. (Lie doesn't identify with gender pronouns by the way). Lie wears a funny suit and shows up at your door, So speak Power to Truth, but watch out for Lie, will try to sell you **** on silver platters, because Truth needs Power most, as if you needed anymore, and Lie will try to hide, not caring for reasons why. Explanation The poem tells a story about a boy who is choosing between telling the truth and lying. He explains how the power of truth makes him feel more confident and independent, and when he chose to lie he felt like he wasn’t doing any good. The section of the poem I chose to talk more about was one of his stories in the poem. He tells the story about his experience in eighth grade when his friends were telling him to steal, but he wanted to be honest with himself and the cash register by secretly paying for the snacks his friends tried to steal. Importance of Our Theme Our theme started off written differently than our final theme we have now. When we first came up with our theme, we made sure that it was broad enough so it wasn’t too specific to the book, but you could tell it was related to what we had just read. Our final product of our theme is “power can ruin anyone and/or everyone if it is given to the wrong person.” This helped make our choices for examples to this theme wider (while still staying relevant to the book.) The theme is important to all three of our examples because power can be a terrible or great thing. The theme relates to the song because the song tells the story about a war and how the politicians had the power. They used it for worse towards the war, which was a perfect example of our theme. Then came the poem. The poem was a little harder to find but it relates to our theme really well. It also tells a story about a boy’s choices through his life that gave him power and what he chose to do. Relevance To Present Day Like we stated before, our theme we came up with was broad but specific at the same time. Our theme relates to the present day because it explains how power can ruin anyone. At any given point anyone in the entire world could have power and decide to use it to do terrible things. When discussing this, we both agreed that just because our theme talks about how power can ruin anyone and or everyone, there’s another layer to it. It also means that power can help anyone and/or everyone. This goes for the modern day as well. Even if someone has power, it doesn’t necessarily mean they plan on using it for bad. Power can ruin anyone and/or everyone in the modern day anywhere in the world, and there’s no reason there shouldn’t be. Even if someone does something bad with the power they’re given, it doesn’t mean everyone else can’t learn from that. Sources https://hellopoetry.com/words/power/
