4. The first term of an arithmetic progression is 7 and the 100th term is 502. Find the sum of the first 50
terms.

5. The sum of the first 8 terms in an arithmetic progression is 56 and the first term is 0. Find the thirteenth
term.

6. The number of students enrolled in Smart Start(SS) Academy is as follows:


In 2000, the number of students enrolled was 200;
In 2001, the number of students enrolled was 250;
In 2002, the number of students enrolled was 300;
This pattern has been continuing every year thereafter.

Find:
(i) how many students are expected to be enrolled in the year 2015.
(ii) the total number of students enrolled at SS, up to and including the year 2013?

7. Sandra Dee is planning to buy a motorcar. On April 1, 2004 she opened a savings account with $500.
She decided to double her savings on a monthly basis and so on May 1, 2004 she deposited $1000 to her
account, on June 1, 2004 she deposited $2000 to her account, and so on. Assuming that she continued
saving at this rate.

(i) What was her total savings on September 1, 2004.


(ii) How long did she take to save $511,500 in total ?

8. At the MTECH’s “Fresher’s Bashment” Concert , seats in the auditorium were arranged as follows: first
row, 14 seats; second row, 26 seats; third row, 38 seats, etc.

) (i) Find the number of seats in the 25th row?


(ii) What is the total number of seats in the auditorium if there are 40 rows?

9. Mr. Rich saves 1 cent on the first day of the month, two cents on the second day, four cents on the third
day, etc. If he continues saving under this system, how long will it take him to accumulate one million

dollars? Note: ( $10  10 cents )

10. A man divides $1005 amongst 4 children; the amounts allocated being in G.P. If the
largest amount is 8 times the smallest amount, find the amounts allocated to each child.

11. The seats at an Amphi-theatre were arranged as follows: first row 12 seats, second row 24 seats, third row
48 seats, etc….. How many students attended the theatre if there are 16 rows in total and all the seats were
taken?

12. (i) Obtain the number of terms in the following Geometric Progression:
4, 12, 36, 108 …………….,708588.
(ii) Hence obtain the sum of the Geometric Progression.
(iii) Determine the 14th term of the G. P.

13. A boy wishes to build a Circular pile of toy bricks so as to have 1 brick in the top row, 3 in the second
row, 5 in the third row and so on. If he has 196 bricks, how many rows can be completed?

14. The first term of an A.P is 10 and the 5th term is 2 more than two times the first term. Find:

(i) the 27th term


(ii) the sum of the first 50 terms.

15. The first term of an A.P and G.P is the same and the 7th term of the A.P is the same as the 5th term of the
G.P. Given that the common difference is 5 and common ratio is 2. Find:

(i) the first term.


(ii) the 75th term of the A.P.
(iii) the sum of the first 25 terms of the G.P.

16. The first three consecutive terms of a geometric progression are (x – 2), (x + 2) and (5x – 2), however,
x  0.

Find the following:


(i) the value of x
(ii) the first term
(ii) the common ratio
(iii) the sum of the first fifty terms

17. The first term of a sequence is 720. If each subsequent term is greater than the previous term by 11;

(i) Write an expression for the nth term of the sequence.


(ii) Find the sum of the first 59 terms of the sequence.

18. Mr. Job’s salary at the end of 1995 was US$ 25,000.00 per annum. At the end of each year thereafter he
received an increase of 7% of the previous years’ salary. Find his salary at the end of 2009.

19. (a) Find the sum to infinity of the following series:
