+ housing (France, Germany and the UK) – largest - a third of their total income
+ food and drink: the second biggest share - about a quarter
+ clothing: the lowest proportion at 7%, 11%, and 15% for France, Germany and the UK
respectively.
(Body paragraph 02 – Turkey / Spain) On the other hand, people in Turkey and Spain
have different spending patterns
(Overview) Overall, the five countries showed a significant difference in their patterns of
consumption of the four fuel types. Coal and lignite were the most used energy sources in
Germany and Britain, while Sweden and Belgium made use of nuclear the most.
(Body Paragraph 01 – nuclear / coal & lignite) Nuclear fuel was the main source of
energy in Belgium, generating 58% of its total electricity - the largest figure in the chart,
followed by Sweden with 45%. However, this source of power was not in use in Italy. The
largest proportion of electricity was produced from coal and lignite in Germany and Britain, at
50% and 34%, being significanty higher than the figure for Sweden, at 1%.
(Body Paragraph 02 – the remaining sources) Italy was the leading country in using
petroleum for electricity production, at 27%, in contrast to remarkably lower figures of 1-2% for

the remaining countries. The production in hydro- and wind power was also insignificant in
Britain and Belgium, at 2%, while half of electricity in Sweden was generated from this source,
being more than twice the figure for Italy, at 20%. The largest proportions of power were
contributed from other sources in Britain and Italy where the percentages ranged between 39%
and 42%.
(Overview) Overall, while people in France, Germany, and the UK spend the most on
housing, Turkish and Spanish families allocate the largest proportion to food and drink. In
contrast, clothing is the smallest spending category in all countries, except for Turkey.
(Body paragraph 01 – France / Germany / the UK) In detail, people in France, Germany
and the UK were most likely to spend on housing, at about a third of their total income. Food and
drink account for the second biggest share, at about a quarter for these three countries. The
lowest proportion of an average family’s budget goes to clothing, at 7%, 11%, and 15% for
France, Germany and the UK respectively.
(Body paragraph 02 – Turkey / Spain) On the other hand, people in Turkey and Spain
have different spending patterns. At 36%, food and drink represent the biggest share of
household expenditure in Turkey, followed by housing, at 20%. The remaining percentages were
for clothing and entertainment with approximately 10% each. Similarly, the Spanish spend 31%
of their household income on food and drink and 18% on housing but allocate the smallest
proportion of only 8% to clothing, which is just half the figure for entertainment.
