GENERAL CARE
1. Collect and Sort
Process:
• On the cart and in the laundry room, separate items that have discoloration, stains, holes, tears, or rough
spots from those items to be routinely laundered
• Look out for objects that were gathered up with the linens (guest items, remotes, etc.)
• Damaged items should be evaluated to determine if they should be thrown away, repaired, or recycled
into cleaning rags
• Towels that become cleaning rags should be marked so they are not mistaken as guest laundry
• Sort soiled items according to the Ecolab Laundering Recommendations
2. Pre-Treat
Process:
• Use facial soap to remove stains
• If stain remains, follow the Stain Treatment Recommendations in the Ecolab Laundering Recommendations,
and use as instructed by the manufacturer
Do Not:
• Mix chemicals
• Let spot cleaner dry before washing it out
Ecolab Products:
• Appropriate Stain Blaster depending on stain (spot cleaner)
- Stain Blaster A – Grass, blood, food
- Stain Blaster B – Bleachable stains

3. Wash
Process:
• Follow the Washer Loading information and Recommended Wash Formulas in the Ecolab
Laundering Recommendations
Do Not:
• Wash towels with bedding
• Use bleach
• Underload or overload the washer
• “Free pour” detergent into the washer
• Overuse fabric softener – it can negatively impact the look and feel of the bedding
• Mix colors of linens
Ecolab Products:
• Formula 1 Laundry System
• Chlorine (if necessary)
• Sour (if necessary)
• Softener (if necessary)
• Stain Blaster
- Power Pak 1 (for white curtains)
- Power Pak 2 (for colored curtains)
• Stain Blaster Reclaim Pak (for heavily stained linen or overall discolored linen)
4. Dry
Process:
• Remove linens immediately after the dryer cycle ends. Linens develop wrinkles when they sit motionless in the dryer.
• Remove sheets and drape them across the cart end to end to prevent wrinkling. Be sure they do not touch the floor.
• Remove pillowcases and drape them over the side of cart
• Ironing is not necessary
• Inspect for stains or damage as you fold
• Fold sheets with a partner or using a folding arm or clip
• Fold sheets and pillowcases carefully so they do not crease or wrinkle
• Fold bath linens and pillowcases on a large flat surface
• Stack linens with the widest fold all facing the same direction
Do Not:
• Let linens sit motionless in the dryer – they will develop wrinkles
• Let linens touch the floor while folding
Our Mission: Great Room Condition!
Laundry Procedures
5. Store
Process:
• If using a transfer cart, make sure it is only for clean linens
• Stack linens in piles according to the type (pillowcases together, flat sheets together by mattress size,
fitted sheets together by mattress size, and towels together) with the thickest fold facing out
• Allow linens at least one day to “rest” before placing them back in a guest room
- Rotate the stock in the storage area. Put yesterday’s clean linens on top of the freshly laundered
items, so yesterday’s linens are used first.
Do Not:
• Overfold to fit into a storage space

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
• Check to make sure lint filters do not have holes. If they do, replace the lint filter.
• Calibrate gas burners monthly to save energy costs.
• Check for burrs (rough patches) inside the washer and dryer periodically and smooth out roughness
before placing product inside the washer and dryer.
• If you find burrs, place product in a mesh bag before laundering.
Laundering Recommendations
This document is intended to convey the best practices for laundering of linens using
Ecolab systems. All recommendations should be considered as guidelines and should
be modified appropriately to accommodate unique conditions at individual properties.
Washer Loading
Washers are rated for the amount of dry weight cotton towels they can wash per
load.
A 100 pound rated washer can wash 100 pounds (CWT) of dry weight
cotton towels per load.
Scale weights must factor in absorbed soils/moisture and the type of
fabric washed.
A 100 pound washer capacity should hold the following soiled weight:
Sheets, Pillowcases 95
Underloading the machine will cause excess mechanical action on the items.
Load only like items together in a cycle. This will decrease the incidence of
pilling and increase sorting efficiency.
Like colors should be washed separately. Avoid mixing colors.
Proper sorting is critical in order to achieve excellent linen quality and laundry
efficiency.
When done right, it allows the soiled linen to be washed using the right wash
formula with the proper amount of chemicals, thereby reducing stains and
lowering linen replacement costs.
Soiled linen is sorting properly by considering the following four critieria:
Amount of soil
Type of fabric

Color of fabric
Finishing of the linen (dried, ironed, starched, etc.)
By appling the four criteria – soiled rooms linen should be sorted as follows:
Bath Towels / Bath Mats / Hand Towels / Washcloths / Bath Mats
Sheets (all sizes) / Pillowcases (all sizes)
Bathroom Rugs
Duvet Covers
Pillow Protectors
Housekeeping Rags
Mattress Pads
Blankets
Dryer Loading
Many laundries over load and over dry terry items, which causes rough
items and excessive drying times. Proper loading and drying
dramatically improves towel softness and increases labor efficiency.
Dryers should be loaded to approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of their capacity
with wet linen. This loading will ensure adequate air flow. As the
bedding dries it will fluff to fill the dryer.
Lint screens need to be cleaned at minimum every other load.

Stain Treatment Recommendations
See the below instructions for proper use of the Stain Blaster system.
Protect your eyes and skin from all types of chemicals
Consult an Ecolab Specialist for instructions specific to your operation.
Hold the sprayer close to the stain and squeeze the trigger firmly to penetrate the stain.
Avoid breathing in any overspray mist; screw the sprayer tip so you get a firm, straight
spray pattern.
Do not mix chemicals--either inside or outside of containers.
Gently work in the chemical with a soft brush for optimal cleaning.
Allow the chemical to work for several minutes, but do not let it dry before washing it out.
Launder treated items in the washer with standard, item specific wash formula to remove
loosened stains and treatment chemicals.
Use these products for laundry stain treatment only.

Using the proper recommended/programmed wash formulas for washing soiled linen is
very important. The formulas are starting points. Formula modifications may be
necessary due to water conditions at specific locations or washer conditions.
Laundry Personnel should be trained to select the right formula for the specific linen type
loaded into the washer. Use of wrong formulas will increase staining, increase linen
costs and slow down laundry productivity.
The Ecolab laundry system in place, the laundry machines used, the water conditions,
the linen conditions and linen type will all effect the laundry wash times and formulas
used.
Below are a few laundering recommendation guidelines for some linen types. Please
note, that the following are guidelines only, and may be modified accordingly by your
Ecolab Sales and Service Representative depending on your individual site
requirements.
