Types of Linen Used in Housekeeping

• Linens used in housekeeping include everything from kitchen


tablecloths at home, surgical mask in a hospitals and up to bedding to a
hotel
• Linens are made from various plant fibers and materials
• Linens are part of the housekeeping responsibilities in both hospitals
and hotels

1. HEMP -a plant fiber obtained from the stem of the hemp plant.

2. Cotton-most commonly used to make industrial cloth , garments,
home furnishings and kitchen and table linens.

3. Linen-from the vegetable of the flax plant and is noted for its
incredible comfort and natural
Principle of Laundering
• All departments that use linen must be familiar with
collection, transportation, arrival , sorting and
delivery system
Linen is usually sorted as follows:
• Dry soiled linen is easier and quicker to sort
• All linen must be sorted by their fiber type
• Linen must also be sorted by the degree of soiling
• Colored linens are sorted from white linens
• Linen used in hotel is often referred to as “flatwork”
ITEMS ARE SORTED IN TO
THE FOLLOWING
CATEGORIES:
• Sheeting- when sorting through sheets and pillowcases ,
it is not uncommon to find soiled tissues , or guest
clothing removed unintentionally by the room attendant
• Pillowcase- must be separated from sheets as they
washed separately
• Duvet Covers- need to be sorted from the sheets as they
are also processed differently
• Towels- need to be sorted from the sheets as they are
also washed differently
• Bathrobes- remove the belts first before washing
ITEMS ARE SORTED IN TO
THE FOLLOWING
CATEGORIES:
• Table Linen- must be sorted to remove food scraps
• Tea towels- all kitchen towels must be washed separately because
of their grease content
• Cleaning Cloth and Mops- all hospitality operations require
cleaning and so will have a supply of cleaning cloth and mops
Common Stains found on Bed and Bath linen are:
• Perspiration
• Hair oils
• Body Lotions
• Cosmetic
• Body fluids
Special Note Regarding Body
Fluids
If bed and bath linen are found with large amounts of
blood , feces , vomit or urine this linen should always
be treated as potentially infectious linen.
The most Common stains found on Table Linen are:
• Red wine
• Coffee and tea
• Lipstick
• Food coloring
• Salad dressing

Items for washing are then sorted into:
• Whites
• Colors
• Dark colors
• Delicate items

Washing Machine The job is to wash the linen and


extract most of the residual water
contents

Continuous batch washers Used in large volume of washing like in


a five star hotel

Tumble dryer Used to dry towels that can wash up


to 5 kg to 80 kg
LAUNDRY CHEMICAL AND OTHER
CLEANING AGENTS
ITEMS USAGE
WATER Good cleaner but the chemical that are added
to it penetrate to the soiled item.

DETERGENTS Used to wash the linen, allowing water to


penetrate the soil and hold it in suspension
before rinsing.
Fabric Softeners Used to soften towels and reduce lint.
STARCH Used to present a crisp and fresh appearance
SOURS OR ACIDS Added in the final rinse to neutralize residual
alkalis because if alkalis are not removed ,
white linen can turn yellow or grey.
