Q1) What was the Cooperative Societies Scandal? [4 marks]

Shariff also lost support because of the “Cooperative Socities Scandal” Cooperative societies accept
deposits from members for purposes that are to benefit the society and the members . Mismanagement
of these societies led to the major collapse in which million of Pakistanis lost theirt money.Nawaz Shariff
Ittefaq Foundations took the loans from the societies and the rumor spread that their savings would not
be returned .when the state’s cooperative societies went bankrupt , in Punjab alone 70,000 people
mostly poor, lost all their savings. This brought distrust of common people to Nawaz Sharrifs
government

Q2) What was the Yellow cab scheme? [4 marks]

To eleminate or lessen the effects of unemplyment, Shariff started a Yellow Cab Scheme, it met with a
great failure to monetary policies and the people did not return the loans they took for yellow cabs
which put country’s economy at a great loss as money was not returned and much money was spend for
vehicles to be imported

Q3) Why did Benazir Bhutto fall from power in 1990? [7 marks]

Benazir’s first tenure met with great failures due to which she was dismissed

Benzazir dissolved the Balochistan assembly.in her own province ,PPP had a coalition with MQM which
could not continu.Coalition with ANP in NWFP also did not work.In Punjab she tried to create problems
for Nawaz Shariff but he was strong enough there .Nawaz Shariff was Chief minister of Punjab at the
time.

Ethnic violence,MQM broke the coalition with PPP and resorted to protest and strikes due to which the
economic life of the city and the country in general was badly affected . Pakka Qila massacre took place
in Hyderabad in which about 300 people mostly from urdu speaking community was shot dead which
led to a bloody violence across Sindh. Law and Order situation became worst and the innocent people
were killed on a daily basis. Nepotism was faced:she appointed her mother Begum Nusrat Bhutto as a
Senior Minister and her father-in-law hakim Ali Zardari as a Chairman of Parliamentary accounts
Committee.Her Husband Asif Ali Zardari was accused of taking rack-offs in every government deal and
earned the nickname “Mr. Ten Percent”

In National Assembly her party could only make a majority through a coalition.within 11 months of her
rule the opposition parties managed to pass a No-confidence motion and had just 12 votes short to
dimiss her from the office.Later,on the relation between Benazir and President Ghulam Ishaq Khan got
strained on the issues of appointng the Chief Judges and high-ranking military personels.

Unfortunately these failures became the reasons of Benazir’s dismissal from office in 1990 and was
unable to complete her five years.
