Is Cooperative still relevant in Indonesia?

In Indonesia, cooperative has been directed from the start to prioritize the interests of
citizens specifically in the economic sector. This is in accordance with the government
system which is democracy system. As democracy system means from citizens, by citizens,
and for citizens. In other sense, the interests of citizens have a main roles in government
decision.
Regarding that, is cooperative still relevant in Indonesia, the answer is yes. There are
several reasons of cooperative is still relevant in Indonesia. First, it is because based on the
Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution about the values of cooperative is kinship. Indonesia has
a huge number of population and most of the population are a diverse society. Indonesian
society is one society regardless of any differences in accordance with Article 1 par. 1 of the
1945 Constitution. In connection with that, in carrying out their duties, it is not uncommon
for the Indonesian people to be done their duties by mutual cooperation. From mutual
cooperation arises the sense of kinship in Indonesian society which is the values adhered by
Indonesian cooperatives.
Second, it is because cooperative become the channel for small business in Indonesia in
developing their business. Due to the economic development in Indonesia, many people
decide to build a small business in many sectors. This makes a wider competition in the
business sphere. Therefore in helping small businesses in business competition,
cooperatives as the business entities help small businesses in developing their business by
becoming their business distributors. By that, small businesses won’t be knocked out by the
big businesses, and the economic system can run well without any part of business get a
hesitation.
Last, it is because in order to build a cooperative is done by easily. There aren’t much
qualification in order to build a cooperative. It is only need members and cooperative’s
name. We don’t need any equity in building a cooperative because the equity itself earns
from each members earnings and the weekly or monthly fees done by mandatory and
voluntary. Other than that, we don’t need to make some license from the government or an
agreement letter from the government in order to build a cooperative. By that, lots of
people tend to build a cooperative more than a company.
 In conclusion, cooperative is still relevant in Indonesia because the values of cooperative
has correlate to Indonesian society’s behaviour which is mutual cooperation. From mutual
cooperation arises the sense of kinship in Indonesian society which is the values of
cooperative. Other reason is because cooperative become the channel for small business in
Indonesia. In order to help the small businesses from being knocked by the big businesses,
cooperative become their business distributors in developing their businesses. Lastly, it is
because there aren’t much qualification in order to build a cooperative. To build a
cooperative, we only need members and cooperative’s name, as the equity we get from the
each members earnings and the weekly or monthly fees.
