Hello!

Today we will be performing the proper technique for honing and stropping

Here are the materials that we will need:

- PPE or personal protective equipment, that includes our lab gown, gloves, and face mask
- Honing stone and stropping device
- Lubricant
- Xylene
- And a cloth

In performing honing, the honing stone should be wiped with xylene with the use of soft cloth in order to prevent
and eliminate unwanted particles found on the surface of the stone.

A lubricant is then applied on the surface of the honing stone. Some of the lubricants that can be used are mineral
oil, clove oil, xylene, liquid paraffin or soapy water.

After this, the knife may already be placed on one end of the honing stone and from the handle end or the heel, it is
pushed diagonally until the other end or the head is reached.

The knife should be turned and that heel to toe direction should be observed in performing this procedure. The
number of strokes that is usually done is 20-30, depending on the severity of nicked knife.

When the honing process is finished, the honing stone and the knife should be cleaned. The honing stone is washed
using a warm soapy water. On the other hand, the xylene must be applied to the knife after the honing in order to
remove the lubricant that was used previously.

After honing the knife, the next procedure is stropping.

In honing, heel to toe direction was observed; however in stropping, toe to heel direction is performed.

The knife is pushed backward and moved forward diagonally with the head portion first and the handled end last

Usually, it is repeated for about 40-120 strokes. Bear in mind that only light pressure must be applied in stropping
the knife so that its cutting edge may not be damaged or destroyed.

After performing the required strokes, an oil or grease is applied to the knife in order to prevent it from rusting.
Greasing of the strop should be performed 1 or 2 days before it is used.

Now you are ready to perform the proper technique of honing and stropping!!
